AM P11010 umasRAPH/c co Massa/wss Fnacfss) UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
KAYRAN NOLAN, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF HIS RIGHT TO BARNARD RYAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE-ACTING PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,146, dated January 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KAYRAN N OLAN, of Galesburg, county of Knox and State of 111inois, have invented certain Improvements in Double-Acting Suction and Force Pumps, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in double-acting suction and force pumps; and the invention consists in the arrangement of the valves, all as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawing a pump embodying my invention is shown in perspective partly broken away to show the arrangement of the valves and the manner of xing them in place.
A represents the central main cylinder, in which the piston B reciprocates. O C' are two side cylinders, the cylinder C connected at its lower end by a pipe, c, with the cylinder A, and the cylinder C curved at its lower end and connected with the cylinder A. The
cylinders A and C C are connected near their upper ends by a horizontal pipe, D, and are connected at their upper ends by a plate, E. G G Gr are caps over the upper ends of the cylinders C AC', respectively, and are bolted to the plate E, as shown. H is a cup with a pipe, h, leading to the upper end ofthe pipe C', through which the pump may be primed and provided with a two-way cock, h. I is a broad flange with holes through it, by which it may be bolted in place on a pump. J K L M N are the valves, seated in the positions shown in the drawing. The valves are plain cylindricahrings, as shown, and are tapering on their exterior surface so that they can be be driven tightly and securely into the tapering places formed, as shown in the drawing, for their reception. Each valve is provided with a yoke, P, to limit the action of the clacks S S S S S. rIhe valves in the cylinders A and C are entered, in putting them in place, from the upper ends of said cylinders, and the valves in the cylinders c and D are entered from their open ends. A hook may be entered from the respective inserting-place for either valve, and engaged with the yoke on said valve for the purpose of withdrawing it. R is the discharge-pipe, and T the suctionpipe. The suction-pipe is forked at its lower end, and provided with two-way cocks t t, by which means water may be drawn from either of two tanks or wells, as desired.
The Aarrows in the drawingwill illustrate plainly the operation of the pump.
Aupair-chamber, V, may be placed, as shown, to produce a constant stream.
I amaware that tapering valves seated in the cylinders like mine have before been used, and I do not therefore claim the construction or method of seating the valves.
' Claim.
In combination with the cylinders A C C and connectingvtubes D c, the five valves J KI L M N, arranged for operation with relation to the piston B, in manner substantially as and for the purpose specified.
