Ietters Patent No. 91.598, dated June 22, 1869.
STOVE-TOP AND COVER.
. v r The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Knoiu all men by these presents That I, ELIJAH W. BIGELOW, of th'eeity and county of \Vorcester, and Oommonwealthof Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Tops and Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesanie, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved stove-top and cover, the latterbeing closed.
. Figure 2-represents aperspective view of the same, with the cover open. Figure 3 represents atransverse section on line A B, fi 1 .7 Tamas those skilled in the art to which my i vention belongs, to make and use the same, I willdscribe it' more in detail.
The nature of any invention consists, first, in an improved mode of'combining a swinging or hinged cover with the top 10f the stove, as will be hereafter Also, in the combiuation, with a'hinged or swinging-cover, of a hinged ornamental cap-or top, as will be hereafter set forth.
In the drawings A represents the top of the stove, in which is formed an opening, B, in the usual manner.
A swinging or hinged cover, 0, is secured to the I top A by a pivotbolt or screw attached to the projection D, whereby the cover 0 may be moved away from the opening B, for feeding the stove, or forother purposes, when desired. (See fig. 2 of the drawings.)
, The swinging cover-O has an opening in the centre, which, in turn, is closed with a cover, E, while to the rear edge of the swinging or hinged cover 0, is hinged an ornamental top or cap, F, by means of the peculiarly-constructed hinge G, as shown in the drawings.
The top 'parts 1 l of the hinge G, which are fastened to theornamental top F, are provided with pro-- jections or spurs a on their lower ends, which rest or strike against the edge of the sliding cover 0, as shown in red lines, fig. 3, when the ornamental topor cap F is raised, whereby the ornamental top or cap F is prevented from falling over back when turned up, as shown in g- 2 I A rim, I), is formed upon the top of the stove A, around the opening B, which fits the inner side of the fiangec, at the edge of sliding cover 0, and retains the latter in position when closed, while at the same time a heater and more finished appearance is given to the stove than would be the case if the flange or rim were arranged to fit theoutside of flange c.
"The-top F may be made of any desired pattern to suit the taste, and maybe "surmounted by'annrn or ornamental handle, (Z.
The joint of the cover 0. is'made loose enough to admit of a slight up-motion of the cover snfiicient to' allow it to be raised to. pass over the rim or flange b,
after which it fits downupon the top plate A, and outside of rim b,as shown in fig. 3 of the drawings.
My present improvements are very important when considered in a practical point of .view, since they obviate the; necessity of. holders and lifting-tongs and,
irons for the purpose of removing the ornamental cap; and besides, there is no danger of the ornamental topor cap falling ofi when the .eoverO is turned around.
Hav-ing described myimprovements in stove-tops and covers,
What I claim therein as new, and of my invention, and .desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination and relative arrangement, with the top plate Aau'd rim 1), of the hinged coverG, with outer flange c, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the hinged or swinging cover O,of the hinged ornamental top F, substantially as and. for the purposes set forth.
3. The, combination, with the hinged cover 0 and hinged ornamental top F, of a projection, a, substan tially as and for the purposes set forth.
' E. W. BIGELOW.
