Description
JAMES WGER.
Heating Stove.
Patented Dec.26, 1871.
UNITED STATES JAMES WAGER, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATING-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,293, dated December 26, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, J Arms WAGER, of the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Imbody of such stove, being formed of a raised rim covered by another swinging raised cover, in which are formed one or more boiler-holes, which are in turn hid from view by swinging or sliding covers, and which latter covers, if more than one, form, with the central raised-handle portion, an ornamental top or finish to the stove.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of my improved stovetop, all its parts being closed. Fi g.2 represents a similar view, the boiler-hole covers being swung open. Fig. 3 represents a like view, showing pots in the boiler-holes, and the entire top swung open to allow fuel to be put into the stove without removing the pots. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the same in the line a' x, Fig. l.
The main top of the stove, in my improvement,
consists of a rim, A, which is raised so that itsV upper horizontal flange a is situated a suitable distance above the line of the upper edge of the stove, on which edge the lower flange a1 of the rim A rests. This rim is, at a2, provided with an ear, by means of which it is pivoted on a isuitable projection from the rear of the stove, near its top edge. Its ange a forms an openingcorresponding in shape to the rim, which openingis closed by means of a second cover, B, the curved flange b of which rests on the flange a of the rim A, and which has formed in its top b1 one or more boiler-holes, C, which may be closed by covers c suitably pivoted on the top b1 near the edges of the boiler-holes. The cover B has, at any suitable point, an ear, b2, formed on it, through which it is pivoted on the flange a of the rim A, while,
' at a suitable distance from this pivot, on the same side ofthe ange a, but near the opposite end of cover B, may be formed a projection, f, by means of which the swinging motion of the cover B is limited and arrested at the point where the cover B covers the opening in rim A.
If two boiler-holes are formed in the top b1 of the cover B, I cast a solid central portion, D, on said top b1, centrally between the boiler-holes C, aga-inst the concave faces d of which the convex hollow covers c abut, forming, with said central solid portion D, any desired ornamental raised or convex gure, so that when th e boiler-holes are not used, and the stove serves for heating purposes only, the entire top, with all the covers closed, will present a pleasing ornamental appearance, hiding the boiler-holes entirely froinview. From the solid portion D may rise a vase or any other ornamental design for a handle.
It it is desired toadd fuel to open-top parlor or parlor cook-stoves, as now commonly constructed, it-is necessary to either remove rst the detachable ornamental cover which hides said holes and then the hole-covers proper, or at least to remove one ofthe pots or boilers in use onthe stove. This necessity is entirely avoided by my invention.` If the stove provided with my improved cover is used for heating purposes, and
it is desired vto replenish the fuel, the cover B, having its boiler-hole covers c closed, is swung around to open rim A, the fuel thrown into the stove, and the cover swung back against the stop f toits normal position. If the stove is, however, used as a cooking-stove, the entire rim A,
with cover B and pots or boilers in the boilerholes C, may be swung around on its pivot a2, thus opening the entire top ofthe stove, enabling the fuel to be added to the nre, and the covers swung back into place without disturbing or removing the pots or boilers from their holes, which, in a parlor, is very inconvenient for want of a proper place to set them down without spoiling carpets, &c.
It will be readily understood that, in stoves of rectangular shape, the rim A and covers B c may be made to slide in proper bearings instead of to swing on pivots, the same results being thereby attained.
The solid portion D of the cover B being cast with the same, adds strength to the cover, and, at the same time, forms, with the hollowconvex covers c, an ornamental figure to hide the boilerholes when the stove is used for heating purposes only. The pivoted covers C may be made flat and 2. The combination of the solidcentra-l port-ion with such ornamentation as to themselves form D of the cover B with the hollow convex-shaped the ornamental cover or top ofthe part B.V covers c coveringthe boiler-hoiesC, so as to form,
Having described my invention, I claimwith the part D, an entire ornamental top7 a-s de- 1. In an open-top parlor cook-stove7 a cover scribed.
hinged to or sliding upon Jche stove and carrying JAMES VVAGER.Y
