- i Be it known that I, ELL/is JAFF, a subject ofthe King of Great Britain, residing at Baltimore city and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Neglige Vest-Shirts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to male wearing apparel, and more particularly to a neglige vest shirt which combines certain features of the ordinary neglige shirt and vest whereby a neat and attractive outer garment is provided which is comfortable and convenient for the wearer and which permits of suspenders to be used for the trousers without the Suspenders showing.

rlhe invention has for one of its objects to provide a garment of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive of construction and so designed as to be retained in position without need of fastening-s for attaching it to the trousers or other parts.

Another ob]- ect of the invention is the provision of a garment which is nished at its bottom like a vest to extend over the trousers at the waist which is provided with stiffening or reinforcing strips or ribs at the sides of the garment and extending from the armholes to the waist to cooperate with the reinforce or button-hole plait at the front of the garment, which, by being heavily starched, will effectively hold the garment down around the trousers and prevent the garment from working up, the garment having a take-up device in the back so as to snugly fit the garment around the waist.

iteferring to the drawing, A designates the i nent which is fashioned after certain features of a neglige shirt and vest and cornprises a front section l and a back section 2 stitched together by the side seams 3 extending from the armholes Li to the waist line, the finent being' provided with sleeves like an ordinary shirt, and a cellar band 6, or an attached collar, if preferred. The front and rear sections l and. 2 of the garment are of such length as to extend over the waist portion et' the garments like an ordinary vest, and the front section is split domi the iront and fastened together by buttons 7 that engage in button holes 8 in the reinforce or plait 9. Arranged at the sides of the garment are vertical stiifening strips or ribs ll) of any suitable washable material and. arranged within the garment concealed from view, the strips being of such length as to extend from the armhcles to the waist of the garment. As shown in Fig. 3, one edge of the strips l0 is fastened to the body of the garment at the seam 3 by the row of stitching ll which secures the front and rear seotions together and the strip extends forwardly from the seam 3 and is secured to the front section l of the garment by the row of stitching 1,2, the free edges of the iriaterial at the seam 2 being bound t second row of stitching l l a. Th pieces l0 or ribs, together with the front plait 9, taire up consicerable starch in the laundering of the garment and become sufliciently stifl` to hold the garment down over the trousers without the need of any fastenings, and the strips. l0 being located at the sides, are concealed to a great extent by the arms. The back section of the garment, as shown in F ig. 2, is provided with a talre-up device so that a snug lit around the waist can be obtained. For this purpose, drawing strings 13 are secured to the bach section of the garment adjacent the waist band 14 thereof, the inner ends of the strings being' arranged in casings l5 secured to the inner surface of the garment. The two strings are drawn together to the proper point and tied whereby the back of the garment is gathered te cause the proper set at the hips and over the abdomen. Since the takeup device is located at the inside of the garment it is concealed from view and a neat and pleasing effect is produced. Since the vest shirt extends over the trousers, suspenders can be worn for supporting the oge e i trousers and the garment will completelyl conceal them.

The vest shirt, which is to take the place of the ordinary neglige shirt, is made oi washable material like the latter and the bottom thereof extends over the waist portion of the trousers and is entirely l'ree at all points from the latter so that the wearer can 'freely move or bend the body without restriction.

Having thus described the invention, what l claim is 1. A Washable neglige vest shirt made as a single piece garment and comprising a body open down the front vfrom the neck to the waist and having arm openings, sleeves secured in the arm openings, said body being of such length as to extend over the waist portion of the trousers and having its bottom vfree at all points from the latter and coni posed oi' Afront and rear sections connected together by side seams extending -l'rom the bottom of the arm holes to the waist o'll the garment, internal stiffening strips extending vertically from the bottom ol' the armholes to the waist and secured at all points to the said body at the said side seams and adapted to be starched to hold the waist portion of the garment down, and a take-up device oonoi' the garment and made of ilexible material and tie strings in the casings arranged with their free ends extending out ol' the same to be tied into a knot whereby the bacl; oi' the garment can be adjusted to the waist portion of the wearer.

2. A washable neglige shirt for men made as a single piece garment and having a body cut after the pattern oi' a vest, sleeves ator ribs secured to the body and extending vertically along the sides thereof, a plait extending vertically down the front ol the body and cooperating with the said ribs to 'form the sole means to maintain the garment in position around the waist of the wearer, the body being of such length as to extend over the waist portion oi the tronl sers, and a take-up device arranged at the l back ol' the shirt adjacent the waist portion thereof and disposed at the inside ol' the garment to be concealed from view.
