FREDERICK O. JONAH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPUTA-CUP AND HOLDER.
Application filed October 25, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FREDERICK C. JONAH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, county of SuHolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve ment in Sputaups and Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a speciiication, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
ln many maladies, it is considered necessary to supply small, cheap, easily destroyed cups for receiving sputa, that, when used for a proper length of time, may be incinerated and a fresh cup be easily appliedto the holder.
In accordance with my invention, i prefer to use for the cup, paper tarred or otherwise treated, to make it antiseptic, the antiseptic material employed being such as to tend to deodorize the sputa, and disinfect the same. The cup is adapted to be set into and to be held by the skeleton holder having a handle that sustains a lid-carrying arm, the latter having connected with it a paper lid. The arm is sustained upon the holder by a spring which serves the purposes of a hinge.
Figure 1, in side elevation, shows a cup and holder in full lines with the lid closed, the dotted lines showing the lid elevated. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of Fig. 1, with the lid elevated. Fig. 3 is a detail of the holder detached. Fig. 4 shows the blank laid out at from which the cup is made, and Fig. 5 represents the blank from which the lid of the cup is made.
To make the cup A, I take a blank of paper, preferably tarred, or other chemically treated paper of the shape shown in Fig. 4, wherein the part a within the dotted lines c represents the bottom of the cup and other parts l), t outside said dotted lines, and when the blank is folded on the dotted lines c c, constitute what l shall designate the side and end walls of the cup, the portions d of the blank being infolded on the dotted line d to complete a tight corner for the cup. The parts b', b have an extension b2 presenting a straight outer edge with substantially rightangle ends, While the parts b have a connected extension e represented as frusto-conical in shape with laterally extended lips e. The parts t2 when infolded on the dotted lines 2 make a part of the top of the cup. The portions e, when infolded on the dotted lines 3, make other parts of the top of the cup.
It will be noticed, Fig. 2, that the square Speccation of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 340,436.
The cover B is made from a blank of the shape shown in Fig. 5, the blank being slitted at 7 to be slipped over the lid-supporting arm B, the blank having a series of lips 8, 9, 10 that are bent downwardly on the dotted lines 12, 13, 14, while a longer lip 15 is bent downwardly on the dotted lines 16 and is interposed between the handle of the holder C, and the wall of the receptacle. This holder,'in the form in which l have herein chosen to represent the same, is composed of a cross-piece 2O having upright arms 21 and another cross-piece 22 having upright arms 23, one of the arms 23 being bent outwardly, downwardly and inwardly as at 24 and connected with the upright arm, thus forming a place for the reception of a finger when handling the cup. On top of the right-hand arm 23, Fig. 3, i have soldered a coiled Wire spring 25 and to the upper end of this spring I have soldered the lid-supporting arm B, the outer end of said arm being slightly upturned, as at 26, so as to be readily engaged by the thumb and by acting on said end 26, the lid-supporting arm may be raised and tipped over, as represented in Fig. 1, the spring yielding at such time to get access to the cup.
lhen the cup has been used for a suflicient length of time, it may be readily pulled up out of the holder and so also the cover may be readily removed from the arm B and another cover supplied in place of it.
Having described my i vention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z 1. A sputa cup of folded paper having a bottoni, side walls bent upward therefrom, rectangular extensions on two opposite side walls, bent inward to form a portieri of the top of the cup, outwardly-tapering extensions on the other two side-walls, bent inward over the rectangular extensions and completing the top of the cup, and laterally extended lips on the outwardly-tapering extensions, bent under the edges of the rectangular extensions and maintaining the topofthecup inposition.
2. The combination with a sputa cup and its lid, of a holder for said cup, said holderI having a lid-holding arm with which the lid is detaohably connected, and a spiral spring attached to and connecting said arm and holder and supporting said arm and permitting the arm and lid to be raised.
3. The combination7 with a sputa Cup holder having upturned, oppositely arranged arms to receive the cup between them, one of said arms being bent to form a handle, and a spring-supported lid-holding arm connected with the handle7 of a removable sputa eup, and a lid therefor detaehably mounted on the lid-holding arm, said arm l5
