UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
WILLIAM B. MURPHY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM H. RUTIY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAST-OFF FOR SUSPENDERS.
Application filed January 23, 1908.
York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cast-Offs for Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in suspenders and the object of the invention is an improved construction of cast-off which may be easily and cheaply manufactured, and which is less bulky and more durable than the cast-offs heretofore in use.
With this and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof reference is to be had to the followin description and the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cast-off showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. 3 is a plan view of the cast-off. Fig. 4 is a section on the line i4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a rear perspective view of the plate. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing the initial or blank form thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a portion of a pair of suspenders to which my invention is applied and which are of any desired construction or design, embodying the ordinary webbing loops B and ends C which are detachably secured together by my imroved cast-offs. This improved device em- JOkllQS an inte ral plate 1 which is slitted near its upper end to form a tongue 2, said tongue being curved backwardly as shown to form a transversely extending slot 8 and coacting with the upper end of the strip which is also curved backwardly to constitute a substantially cylindrical bearing memher 4. A webbing loop B is designed to travel through the slot 3 and around the Specification of Letters Patent.

bearing member 4 which is constructed as before descrlbed 1n orderto present a rounded surface to the webbing and therefore not 1 1 1 abiaoe tne same. The plate 1 preferably tapers toward its lower end and its sides are doubled upon themselves backwardly to form flanges 5 which converge downwardly and clench the side edges of a flexible tab 6 to secure one end thereof to the rear face of the plate. The tab 6 is passed around the corresponding suspender end in the custom ary way and its other or free end has a separable connection with the plate 1 in order to detachably secure the suspender end to the webbing loop. In order to establish this separable connection between the free end of the tab 6 and the plate 1, the latter is preferably provided with a head 7 which projects from the front face of the plate as shown, and the free end of the tab carries a socket memher 8 adapted for engagement with said head.
It is to be understood that the head may be formed separate from the plate and secured thereto in any suitable manner, or that it may be formed integral therewith, and it is to be further understood that the socket or head may be rigid or resilient according as desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
As a new article of manufacture, a cast-off of the character described, embodying a plate tapered towards its lower end and having its sides doubled upon themselves to form converging flanges adapted to clench one end of a flexible tab, the plate being slitted near its upper end to form a tongue that is curved backwardly to form a transverse slot, and that co-acts with the upper end of the plate which is also curved backwardly, to constitute a cylindrical bearing member, one member of a separable connec tion being struck from the plate below the slot and being adapted to engage the other or free end of the tab.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. MURPHY.
