Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. a, 190e.
lip-nieguen and nach ie, ieee. serial No. 193,957;I
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful VImprovements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX'- act description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming o a part of this specication, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon;
This invention relates to im rovements in hinges designed Vmore especially foruse in connection withcovers for cooking utensils,
- tops of the fuel receptacle of'wood burning air tight stoves, etc., and has for its object to provide the hinge with an extension constituting a handle by means of which the cover may he raised, thus avoidin the necessity of taking hold of the cover itseIf.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts all as will be now describedand the particular features of novelty pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawingswherein is illustrated the Y referred embodiment of the invention- 4igure 1 is a perspective view of the up er portion of the fuel receptacle of a stove with cover provided with the improved hinge. Fig. 2, is a similar view with the cover partially raised. Fig. 3, is a side elevation with cover fully raised. Y Fig.v 4 is a sectional view. Fig. 5, is a rear elevation.
Similar letters of reference in the several iigures indicate the same parts.
Referring to the drawings the letter A indicates the upper portion of the fuel receptacle, shown as cylindrical, of anair tight stove having va bead a around its edge. rJ'Che cover B for this receptacle, is provided with a downwardly extending portion b which iits within the receptacle B, when the cover is in closed position, and with an outwardly eX- tending flange b2, which rests on the top of the receptacle A when in closed position, all as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The hinge by which the cover B is connected to the receptacle B is formed of'a single piece of wire of suitable length and weight.
In constructing the hinge, the wire, at equal distances from each end is bent'substantially at right angles forming the tions C C, and is then bent slightly upward znection porand then downward, forming the curved portions c c. From these curved portlons `c c, the Wire is then carried inward at substantially right angles forming the portions .c c, the central portion of the wire being then formed into a loop c2 extending outwardly at substantially right angles as shown in Figs. l and 4.
The ortions C C of the hinge are rigidly secure tothe cover B, by clips b b', anda plate or ear a secured to the receptacle A, is provided or formed withportions c2 a2, which are bent over the portions c c of the hinge forming bearings for the hinge as will readily be understood.
When it is desired to raise the cover of the receptacle it is only necessary to grasp the loo or handle ortion@2 of the hinge, or an or inary stove id lifter may be inserted in the loop and then by a downward pressure thereon, the cover will be swung upward as will be readily understood. If desired the cover may be raised until the handle or loop ortion c2 of the hinge contacts with the ody of the receptacle A, when owing to the angular osition of said portion c2, the cover B, will t en be thrown over its pivotal oint of connection with the receptacle an will remain in this open position, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. By forming the hinge with the curved or bent portions c c, the hinge will take over the bead a round the up er edge of the receptacle A and the flange 1Eb) of the cover B.
It will be seen that with a hinge constructed according to this invention, the cover of the stove may be raised without liability of burning or soiling the hands.
While the invention has been shown and described, in connection with a stove, it will of course be understood that it is equally well adapted for use in connection with other articles, such as cooking utensils, etc.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a receptacle having a beaded edge at the entrance openin and al cover having flanges in angular re ation to overlie the beaded edge and roject within the rece tacle respectively, o a hinge conetween the cover and receptacle embodying a hinge plate secured to the side ofthe receptacle and having spaced lugs forming bearings .in alinement with each other for the pintles, and a pintle and l through from tlle outer to tlie inner end of 1U handle member Aformed of a single length of said bearings, tile Central portion between die Wire having its ends secured to the top of bearinue being bent to forni an outwardly the Cover and parallel to each other, aninterl projecting handle; substantially as (lemediate portion of each arm being Curved to scribed.
extend out around the ange of tlie cover l HENRY LANGE. and beaded edge of the receptacle, and to Titneesesz extend from the curved portion in aline- JOEL l. YJOODRUFF,
ment with eaoh other to form pintles passing HERMAN l. EHRHARDT.
