U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES G. SARGENT, OF EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO O. H. WHEELER, OF SAME PLACE.
BAKE-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.. 598,888, dated February 8, 1898.
Application filed June 24, 1897- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. SARGENT, of Exeter, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bake- Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to cooking utensils. Its object is to provide a new form of bakepan which shall be readily adapted for various operations incident to baking.
My invention consists of certain novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my pan open. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing my pan closed.
The numeral 1 indicates the body of my pan, which may be of any ordinary shape, but is preferably made square and with flaring sides. Handles 2 are held upon this body in the usual position. A reinforcing-wire 3 extends around the upper part thereof, and openings 4 are made through the body, upon the sides thereof, in order to receive certain portions of the cover hereinafter described. A rack 5 is held in the bottom of this body portion for the usual purpose.
The top of my device is composed of two portions 6 and 7, one of which has a flange 8 thereon adapted to fit inside of the opposing member and form a tight joint. Handles 9 are formed upon these top portions. Lugs 10, rebent upon themselves, pass through the openings and around the reinforcing-wire of the body portion, thus forming hinges. Said lugs are so bent as to permit of their being lifted free from the openings when the tops are turned back for convenience in cleansing, 800. The edges of the two top portions are also reinforced by means of suitable wire, as shown.
A ventilator 11 is formed in one end of my device and is of the usual construction. A bolt 12, having a flattened head 13 and a handle 14, moves in clips 15 upon the body portion. Lugs 16 are formed upon the tops and coact with the head upon the bolt. It is ob- Serial No. 642,120. (No model.)
vious that when this bolt is pushed up it will raise the tops simultaneously and also afford means of ventilation.
It will be noted that in the construction I preferably employ I manufacture my device from sheet metal out in a single piece and bent to form the bottom or body portion and two similar pieces bent to form the two top portions. The flanges I afterward apply by means of rivets or the like. It is of course plain that flanges may be provided upon the lower edge of the top portions, if deemed necessary, in order to make the joints between said top portions and the bottom portion tighter than when constructed without said flanges.
It is obvious that this device offers many advantages over those in use at present, inasmuch as through the division of the top into two portions the same may be opened in the oven without withdrawing the device therefrom, while those in present use, having the top hinged to one side or the end and formed of a solid piece, require so much room that it is impossible to open them in the oven,
and they must be withdrawn whenever it becomes necessary to baste a roast or perform any of the operations incident to cooking the same.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form of my device without departing from the material principles thereof, and I do not, therefore, desire to confine myself to the exact form herein shown and described, but wish to include all such forms that properly come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a baking-pan, the combination with a body portion, of top portions provided with flanges adapted to fit said body portion and one of which is provided with a suitable flange adapted to fit the opposing top portion, handles formed upon said portions, a ventilator formed in one of said portions, a bolt held upon the body portion, lugs formed upon said top portions adapted to coact with said bolt, and a rack held within said body portion, substantially as described.
2. In a baking-pan, the combination with the body portion, of a pair of top portions In testimony whereof I have signed this hinged to said body portion, to form a comspecification in the presence of two subscrib- I0 pletely-closed pan when shut, a bolt sustained ing witnesses.
in the body portion, lugs formed on the top portions adapted to coact with said bolt CHARLES SARGENT' whereby the top parts may be simultaneously \Vitnesses:
