WILLIAM D. STEWART, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
CPMIBINATION PEN, PENCIL-HOLDER, AND LETTER-SCALE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 9, 1907. Serial No. 382,960.
.Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county 'of-Los Angeles, State of California, have invented and discovered a new and useful Improvement in a Combination Pen, Pencil-Holder, and Letter- Scale; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
. This invention relates to improvements in an instrument, a pencil and'a pen, pencil and pen holders and? letter scales; and the obj ects of my improvements are, to assemble in one instrument a number of tools, each of them capable of being used separately, when arranged properly, relatively to the other parts thereof; and to re-adjust and arrange into a single instrument the different tools after the separate and individual uses of the various parts thereof have been accomplished. V
The invention consists essentially in the construction and arrangement of the different parts, and in the adjustment of the several parts relatively to each when in use and when not in use. I attain these objects by the-construction and arrangement of the parts illustrated upon the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a view in elevation of my improved instrument, two of the parts, the pencil and the eraser being in positions ready for use; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my improvement taken on the line a-a of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of the letter scales the other parts of the instruments removed, showing an envelop a portion thereof broken away being weighed; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the pen and eraser sleeve removed from the other parts of the instrument, showing the pen and eraser holder also in section, the eraser in section and the pen and pen clamps illustrated in elevation; and Fig. 5 is a view I in cross section taken on the line 5-6 of Fig. 1, looking in the directions of the arrows.
Similar reference numerals, letters and characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The reference numeral 1 denotes the pencil holder, 2 indicates the letter scale holder,
the two holders 1 and 2 preferably made integral as shown upon F gs. 1 and 2 of the V drawings.
The numeral 3 refers to the pencil, held in the holder 1 by frictional contact therewith, and the pencil holder is preferably 1 provided with an opening 4 and slot 4 extending from said opening 4 to the free end of the holder, which enables the holder to accommodate pencils of various sizes.
The letter scale holder 2, is desirably made in one piece, with the said pencil holder, and is provided with a counter sunk portion 4", upon the surface thereof having a slot 5 therein. There is a counter sunk lip 6-forming a part of the holder 2, on which the projection 7 preferably a part of the sliding block 8, is adapted to move against the tension of the spring 9, surrounding the letter-hook rod 10 secured at one end to the block 8 within the holder 2; The free end of the rod 10 extends through the opening 11, of the scale holder 2, and is provided with a hook 12 to .pierce the envelop 20, ready to be weighed and deposited in the mail receptacles upon {railway trains and other places.
My improved instrument for which I seek protection is signally useful and has been found to be practical among traveling men, who use many and various means for writing and posting letters while traveling from place to place.
The free end of the holder 2, is made smaller than the end of the pen and eraser,
sleeve 15, and is adapted to be received therein, as shown upon Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 40f the drawings.
he pen and eraser holder 16 is preferably made of one piece of material, desirably metal, as are the said pencil holder 1 and the scale holder 2, hereinbefore referred to.
'The pen 17 is removably secured 1n one end of the said pen and eraser holder 16, by means of clips 18, as shown upon Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings.
The eraser 19, made of any suitable material, preferably of rubber; I fasten in any suitable manner, as illustrated upon Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, in the opposlte end of the pen and eraser holder 16, from that to which the pen 17 is removably secured.
What I claim anddesire to secure by Let:
'ters Patent is,
- 1. An improved article, the combination posite end of the sleeve re-movably fastened to the scale holder.
2. An article of manufacture, the combination with a pencil holder and the pencil frictionally secured therein, of the scale holder carrying scales, the pen and eraser sleeve having one end thereof adapted to re-' ceive therein one end of the scale holder, and
the pen and eraser holder having a pen in one end and an eraser in the other end there of, adapted to be received Within one end 15 of the pen and eraser sleeve.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM D. STEWART. Witnesses 7 JAMES B. Rooms, M. C. STEWART.
