BENJAMIN F CARPENTER, OF ROSELLE, NElV JERSEY.
HOLDER FOR POSTAGE=STAMPS OR OTHER ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,663, dated March 3, 1891f Application filed July 17,1890. Serial No. 859,019. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. CARPEN- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roselle, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Postage-Stamps and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a holder in which postage-stamps or other arti cles can be carried conveniently either in the pocket or by attaching the holder to a watchchain.
The peculiar and novel construction of my holder is pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal central section of my holder in an enlarged scale. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the receptacle detached. I
My holder is composed of a tube or receiver A and a receptacle B, which fits the receiver A snugly and is retained therein by frictional contact, so that it can be withdrawn and reinserted by applying sufficientpowcr toovercome the friction, but it is retained sufficiently tight to prevent it from dropping out accidentally. The receiver A is provided with a head or bottom a; but this bottom is secured in the interior of the receiver at some distance from its end, so as to form a socket a, by means of which the receiver may be attached to the end of a lead-pencil or of a pen-holder. The receptacle B is provided withfinger-holes b b in its sides and with a head I), which is secured in the interior of the receptacle at some distance from its end, so as to form a socket for the reception of a rubber eraser or of any other device.
When my holder is to be used for postagestamps, I take a number of stamps and form the same into a coil, the diameter of which is somewhat smaller than the inside diameter of the receptacle B, so that after the coil has been inserted into the receptacle it rebounds or uncoils sufficiently to prevent the postagestamps from adhering to each other when they are exposed to a moist atmosphere. At the same time the coil of stamps as it uncoils bears against the inner surface of the receptacle, and in order to push the coil out of the receptacle I have provided the finger-holes Z) b.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is
1. A postage-stamp holder consisting of a cylindrical tubular receiver B, open at one end for the introduction of postage-stamps or other articles, and provided with oppositelyarranged finger-holes b for moving the articles lengthwise outof the tubular receiver, in combination with a cylindrical tubular receptacle A, into and out of which the cylindrical receiver slides lengthwise, said cylindrical receptacle having at one end a socket to to receive the end of a pencil or pen-holder and closed by an internal head or bottom a, which limits the lengthwise sliding movement of the cylindrical receiver, substantially as described.
2. A holder for postage-stamps and other articles, composed of a receiver A, provided with an internal head a and a socket to, and of a receptacle B, provided with an internal head I) and a socket 11 substantially as described.
A holder for postage-stamps and other articles, composed of a receiver A, provided with an internal head a and a socket to, and of a receptacle B, provided with finger-holes b b, an internal head I), and a socket 19 substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. CARPENTER. Witnesses:
W. C. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
