UNITED srnrns PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIE P. NOLEN, OF GEIHSEMANE, ARKANSAS.
VENTILATING-BOOT.
Application filed. February 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIE P. NOLEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Gethsemane, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating-Boots, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a novel means for ventilating the interior of boots, shoes, and like articles of foot wear, and is more particularly designed for use in' connection with gum or rubber boots since the latter are necessarily practically air tight in their formation.
The object of the invention is to accomplish this result by means of a novel lining which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and can be readily applied to the interior of the boot.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for efiecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boot constructed in accordance with the invention,
parts being removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the boot. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In general the invention contemplates an article of foot wear provided with a cellular lining, the cells being preferably formed of flexible material so that at each step of the wearer they are compressed and permitted to expand and act as pumps to keep the air in circulation.
The invention is more particularly adapted for use in connection with gum or rubber boots since the latter are more or less objectionable in that they cause undue perspiration of the foot and are frequently the cause of rheumatism. They are further objectionable as ordinarily formed since it is ex- Specification of Letters Patent.
tremely difficult to dry the interior thereof Patented Dec. 8, 1908.

and they are therefore subject to rapid decomposition.
For the purpose of illustration the invention is shown in the present instance as applied to a boot 1 which may be of the conventional formation. The cellular lining comprises a plurality of tubes 2'extending up and down upon the interior of the boot and having their upper ends open. The inner sides of these tubular cells 2 are provided with the lateral openings 3 through which air is permitted to pass from the interior of the boot to the cells or vice versa. These tubes 2 are formed of flexible material so that as the wearer walks from place to place the tubes are alternately compressed and then permitted to expand and a continuous movement of the air thereby brought about. For the purpose of preventing the foot from coming in direct contact with the rubber the tubular cells 2 are provided with a covering 4 which may be composed of any suitable fabric or of soft kid as found desirable. With this cellular lining it will be readily apparent that the interior of the boot will be effectively ventilated so as to keep the same in a cool dry condition and prevent rheumatism. It may also be mentioned that in the present instance the sole of the boot has the edges thereof extended upwardly around the foot portion so as to form a guard to protect the same.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
The combination of an article of foot wear, a cellular lining arranged within the article of foot wear for ventilating the interior thereof and composed of a plurality of longitudinally disposed tubular cells, and a covering extending over the tubular cells, the said covering and tubular cells being formed with corresponding openings.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIE P. NOLEN. [L. s.]
