To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EPHRAIM WITMAN, J r., citizen of the United States, residing at Wernersville, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification. i

This invention relates to an improved bottle and the object in the present instance is to so construct a bottle that it can not be refilled after being once emptied of its contents Without giving evidence of such refilling. I accomplish this object by making the bottle neck with a frangible or removable upper extremity which it is necessary to remove before the bottle may be emptied, and when so broken the fact that the bottle cannot again be used as an original package is quite evident as the appearance of the bottle is greatly changed.

The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-

Figure I is an elevation of a bottle neck with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bottle with the stopper removed and Fig. 4 is a detail of the closing Fig. 5 is a detail view of the stopper and Fig. 6 shows the stopper spring, in two views.

The numeral 1 designates the neck of the bottle.

2 designates an annular depression creating an easily breakable line.

In the inner wall of the neck I form a lug 3 and at a point opposite said lug I form a depression 4. At the top of the bottle opening at one point I cut away a'portion of the inner wall, as shown at 5, to permit of the entrance of the stopper spring, referred to later. This space is slightly larger at its top than at any other point and the wall tapers slightly, so that the spring will be gradually pressed against the body of the stopper as it enters the bottle, as the stopper is entered with a turning or screw motion.

The numeral 6 designates the stopper. This stopper is formed with a head 7 in which I form two depressions 8 for engagement by a suitable instrument 9 for inserting the stopper in the bottle. The body of the stopper is formed with a spiral depression 10 extending approximately one-half its circumference, adapted to engage the lug 3 in the bottle neck. At a point opposite this spiral depression I form another depression 11 in which is loosely seated a fiat spring 12, the free end of which tends to bear against the inner wall of the bottle neck and to finally enter in the depression 4 therein.

lVhen the bottle is. filled, the stopper is inserted in the neck, the spring 12 being pressed towards the body of the stopper until it enters the space 5; the stopper is then screwed into the neck by means of the instrument 9, the lug 3 engaging the spiral depression 10 and when the spring 12 reaches the depression 4 it will snap thereinto and the stopper will thus be looked as against any reverse movement. When it is desired to empty the bottle of its contents, the neck is given a blow suflicient to crack it off at the frangible depression 2. The cork stopper 14 is removed and the contents may be drawn, but as the bottle has now lost its original appearance it is evident that it cannot again be used as an original package. Nor is it possible to remove the stopper 6 after it has been inserted as above described or to otherwise draw the contents of the bottle without breaking the neck.

Having thus fully described my invention and its operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of a bottle neck having a lug on its inner wall, said wall having a depression formed therein at a point opposite said lug and a portion of said inner wall, at its top, cut away, with a stopper having an enlarged head with two key engagin depressions in its top, and having a spira depression in the body thereof extending onehalf of its circumference, and having a second depression opposite said spiral depression and a removable flat spring seated in said last named depression whose free end is adapted to enter the depression in the inner wall of the neck.
