Lette/rs Patent No. 90,473, dated May 25, 1869.
IMPRCVED vCARRIAGE-il'ACK The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the, name.
+41 To all Iwhom it ma/y concern Be it known that I, J. NEWTON THATCHER, of Martinsburg, in the county of Berkeley, and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and improved Wagon-Jack;A and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make 'and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This inventionI relates to improvements in' jacksfor raising-cai'riage-wheels oi the ground, 'to facilitate the renoval of them for lubricating and other purposes.'
It` consists in the arrangement, upon a suitable crum on the said stand, for vehicles of diierent heights, and a holding-bar, for holding the lever when the vehicle has been raised up, all as hereinafter fiilly specip The drawing represents a side elevation of my improved jack, supporting a wheel in the elevated position.
Arepresents a stand, having a foot, B, considerably 'elongated in the direction C.
D represents an elevating-lever, having a fulcruiu in the top of the stand, which may be adjusted vertically or longitudinally.
Also, a notch, or groove, E, in the end of the short arm, wherein the axle of the vehicle is designed to rest.
The long arm of the lever is provided with a metallic loop, F, at one side, wherein the free end of a holding-har, G, slides, and'on to which it catches by means of a notched bar, H, secured thereto. The otherrend of the said holding-bar is jointed to the foot B.
In swinging down the long arm of the lever D, to raise an axle, the loop F will slide along the holdingbar, and the notched bar will catch upon the loop and hold the lever D down.
The elongation of the foot B, at O, beyond the length of the short arm, prevents the stand from falling over in that direction, and the wheel, opposite to that raised, prevents falling laterally.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with the stand A, havingv an elongated foot, of the lever D, notched holding-bar G, and loop F, all substantially as specified.
' J. N. THATGHER.
