AUTOMOBILE JACK.
Application led May 11, 1925.
My invention relates to improvements in automobile jacks and is primarily directed toward a jack for use with automobiles having the so-called balloon tires. Automd biles equipped with this type of tire require i, 1 and the bottom links e, e.
a jack having a long liit and which may he lowered to a point where the engaging por tion of the jack is not much more than tour or tour and a haltl inches from the ground. At the same time a long litt is necessary on the part of the jack to clear the wheel from the ground in event the tire becomes deflated.
My invention is directed toward this type of jack wherein I provide an extremely long liit andwherein the engaging member of the jack may be lowered to a point very close to the ground.
For the purpose of disclosing my invention I have illustrated certain embodiments thereof in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation ot a jack embodying my invention;

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated I provide a pair ot oppositely disposed togo'les each comprising the top links The top links are pivotally connected at their upper extremities by a pair oit top link plates 3, 3 which are spaced apart to receive the ends of the links and provided with pivots 4i, t 'for pivotally connecting the toggle links 1. 1 and the top links 3, 3 together. These top links 37 3 are spread intermediate of their ends as at 5 to receive the shank 6 of the usual engaging member 7, the shank being rotatably supported in the spread portion.

horizontal members of the angle plates 10 are bent downwardly to form iianges 12 the bottoms of which lie in the same horizontal plane as the bottom of the plate 11. The knuckle ends of one set of toggle links 1 and 2 are connected together by a pair oi' yoke links 13 straddling the toggle links and provided with pivot pins 141-., 14. rihe opposite pair ot toggle links 1 and 2 are connected together by a pair ot yoke plates 15 which are spaced apart to receive between the same the knuckle ends ot the toggle links 1 and 2, which ends are connected by pivots 16, 16 to the yoke plates.
For manipulating the knuckles of the oppositely disposed toggle links to cause them tov approach one another and thereby straighten the toggles for lifting the jack or for permitting them to separate and bend the knuckles to thereby lower the jack, I provide a rack bar 17 pivotally connected by the pivot pin 18 to the yoke links 13 and slidably mounted between the yoke plates 15. An oscillating pawl bar 19 is pivoted on one oi the yoke plates 15 and its pivot stud 20 extends through the yoke plate heilig squared on its outer end for the reception of a squared socket of a manipulating handle 21. This pawl bar 19 is provided with a pawl 22 adapted, during the oscillation of the bar. to engage the rack ot the rack bar 17 and draw the two knuckles of the toggles together. A holding pawl 23 is also mounted on one of the yoke plates to engage the rack of the rack bar 17 during the retracting movement of the pawl 22.
Hanging from suitable transversely eX- tending pins 24, 2li extending between the yoke plates 15 is a brake shoe 25, this shoe being provided with diagonally disposed elongated slots 26 through which the supporting pins 24 pass and intermediate of its ends with an arcuate slot 27 in which operates a pin 28 on an extension 29 o'f the pawl arm 19. This brake shoe is provided with a pair of upwardly extending arms 30 and 31 adapted when the plate is raised or moved vertically, to engage the pawls 22 and 23 and raise the same out of operative relation with respect to the rack or the rack bar 17. In normal operation. that is, the operation oi raising the jack, the oscillating movement of the pawl har 17 is limited by a stop pin 32 so that the oscillation of the pin 28 will he within the limits of the slot 27. 1n event it is desired to lower the jack the stop pin 32 may he Withdrawn from the path of .the handle 2l by manipulating the Cain `lever 33 and this will permit an eXtreme throw of the lever to the left, Viewing the structure in Fig. l, which will cause the -pinQS to engage the Wall of the slot 27 and raise the .brake shoe into frictional engagement With the lower edge of the rack bar 17 at the saine time moving the arms and 3l into engagement with the pawls 22 and 23 and .eisengaging vthem from the rack. Due to the leverage obtained `on 4the operating arm 2l, sufficient braking friction may be obtained on the lower edge of the rack `bar 17 by the brake shoe 25 to hold the toggles from separating under the influence of any Weight applied :to 'the top thereof. However, by slightly easing -up on the Aarm '2l the brake maybe released to any .extent desi-red -to permit .the Weight -on the top of the toggles to bend @the same, Vthere-by lowering the ack. During 4this manipulation however, Vthe arms 30 and 31 will remain in engagement with the pawls 22 and 23 to prevent them Yfrom dropping into engagement With the rack oi the rack bar 17.
In F ig. 6 I have illustrated -a structure wherein, if desired, `the pearls 22 and 23 lmay be 4disengaged from the rack :ba-r without the manipulation Aof the brake `shoe Q5 or got the lever 21. In this structure -thefpawl `bar 19 is extended as at 34; and Acarries a bell crank leverpivoted at .36 the-reto.
