TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be itrknown that I, JHN CAMKP, .of Olney, Richland' county, and YState of Illinois, have invented a.' certain new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description -of the same, reference being hadl to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specication.
Theobject of this inventionis to provide a carriaee-jack which auswerslall'the requirements for a four` o vWheel vehicle, and is cheaply constructed and not liable to get out of -order.
The stand consists of a single block 'of wood, which is slotted to receive the lever-head.
The l'ever is supported on an arbor, passing transversely through the Lipper part of the stand, and has a notch upon each' side of lthe head, intended, respectively, to raise the fore and rear axle. In rising, the axle is carried pastthe centre of oscillation, so that the lever is self-supporting. I
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevatiouoi my improved jack.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.
A is the stand, and B the-lever. The latter turns on a pin, C, andvhas notches or recesses, b b', to receive the axles. The recesso is farther removed from the axis of Aoscillaticm than the recess Ib', so that when. `the former is used, the axle will be raisedl to a higher elevation than when the latter is brought into requisition, thus rendering it available,WthOULany complicated adjustment, for vehicles with fourwheels. The central extension, b, between the recesses, is made sufficiently broad to bring the axle and the free end of the lever both on one side of a vertical line extending through the arbor, s o .that the lever is self-sustaining, and requires.
no special device to holdit in position, v
Itwill be observed that the position of the jacki's reversed in using the different recesses. Having thus explained my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent`- -V The combination of the reversible leveB b b', the stand A, and fulcrum-pn C, relatively arranged to operate in the manner described for the purpose specified. v 'E Tvthe above specification ofmy improvement in lifting-jacks, I have signed my hand, this 20th day of March, A. 1).*,1868t f JOHN CAMP.
