UNITED STATES" PATENT orrion. f j i :A TEMI-.MQQESQNQor efficace,
.Bezit known that'I, Erin. vOvLsoiv, a
n, citizen of theUnited States, residing at Chii ful Improvements in Card-Index Drawers,
cago, in the, county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and use- ,.of which the following is a specification.
i l r1`hi siinvention relates to improvements in cardindex drawers or documentholders and it`lias foroii'e of its objects to Kprovide an Q niiproved means` `for locking the, follower be. cheap tand durable' in vco`nstruc'tio\n\\and blockl atfa'iiydesired position' to hold the -gcards orotlier articles in position within thev drawer.`
. A g further object isA to provide improved -ineansI whereby'the adjustment l of the fol'- lower. or block will release the locking means tfpermit the block to b he Acards 4or articles. l A1 furtherV objectv is ,l to provide an improveddevice Vof this character which shall eifectiveand eicient in operation. `Totheattainment of these ends and the accomplishment 'of' other new and useful A Y objects as willappear, the invention consists inV the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter "more fully de` scribed and claimedand shown in the compaiiying drawing illustrating the embodiment of the invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an improved device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the guides or ways in which the locking pawl 'is adapted 'to move and showing the rack with which the pawl coperates to lockthe follower block in position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing and in the present exemplication of the invention, the drawer or holder comprises a bottom 5, sides 6 and ends 7. Thisl drawer or holder may be of any desired size and configuration and constructed of any suite adjusted t-o release` n .patented Npv. 24, laos.
Vextend longitudinallythereofand' may be constructed of any suitable malteriahpreferably metal. One edge of each of the members 1Q" is bent to form a laterally projecting flange which'is shaped'tofori'n'a series of ratchet teeth 11 andthe'other 'edge of the member 1Q is bent'to forni a laterally PTOJ'EC'C-ng ilange`12 Y.which extends over the ratchet teeth 11 and isfspaced therefrom to forma guide or'way extending substantially the entire length of the drawer or holder. These membersl'O may be secured in position'in` any. desired or suitable manner preferably by means of fastening devices 13, which pass through the body portion of the memberjl'O between the flanges thereof and into the respective sides l6 and these members are so arranged that the respective flanges thereof wllextend towards .the inside ofthe drawer.
jlPivotally secured to'. each of the extremities of the follower block, 8, preferably intermediate.y its upper :and lower edges thereof, is adog. or pawl 14 and these dogs orepawls are adapted to-staiid within the guides or ways formed vby .the members l0 .when the followerv block 8 is in position. The extremity 15 ofthe dog .or pawll is 'adapted to restand inovenpon theratchet teeth 11 when the follower'S is advanced and to engage the teethl to .lockv the followeragainst retrograde movement when the latter has assumed the desired position. The other extremity 16 of the dog or pawl is adapted to assume aposition in proximity to the flange 12 of the member when the extremity 15 is in engagement with one of the teeth of the ratchet 11.
When itis desired'to unlock the follower 8 to release the cards 9, the follower may be raised or moved in a direction transverse to the direction of movement thereof in the holder when locking or releasing the cards,
and as the follower is thus moved or raised the extremity 16 of the dog or pawl 14. will engage the flange 12 and a further raising movement of the follower 8 will canse a dog or pawl to be rocked about its point of pivotal support to release the extremity 15 from the ratchetv teeth 11 and when in this position the follower 8 may be moved back and forth in the drawer or holder, the ange 12 serving as a guide against which the pawl moves and this guide also serves to hold the extremity 15 of the dog or pawl out of en- .gagement with the ratchet @cth 11.
4 ment thereof have been specieally described that is 'necessary is to lVith this ini proved construction it will be 1 apparent that the cards 9 `may be placed g within lthe drawer or holder and the follower block 8 may be moved upon the bottom 5 to clamp the cards in position and g when it is desired to release the cards all bodily raise the follower block to unlock the suine after which l the follower may be moved to the desired 1. position. The extremity 15 of the dog or pawl is preferably heavier than the eX- tremity 16 to cause the pawl to be held in engagement with the ratchet teeth l1 by means of gravity.
In order that the invention might be fully understood the details of an embodibut lVhat I claim as new is- 1. In combination in a document holder, a follower, a lock for the follower, and, means adapted to be engaged by thelock j to release the lower is raised.
In combination in a 1 a. follower, a pawl pivotally supported l the follower, means cooperating j pawl for locking the follower-1n position, l and means adapted to be engaged by the j pawl to tripthe latter when the follower is l follower when the said folg document holder, i'
by i with .the
raised.
In combination in a document holder, a follower adjustable therein, a pawl piV- otally supported by the follower, a rack cooperating with the pawl to lock the follower 1 in its adjusted position, and a guide spaced from the rack, said guide being adapted to trip the pawl when the follower is raised L otally supported and maintain the pawl outA of engagement with the -raelrwhile the follower is raised to permit a free adjustment of the follower. 4. In combination in a document holder,
a follower adjustable therein, a pawl pivby the operating with the pawl for locking the follower in an adjusted position, and a guide, sa'id pawl being provided with a projet-ting portion adapted to engage the guide follower, means eoto cause. the pawlto assume an inactive position when the follower is raised and said portion being also adapted to be moved i along the guide as the follower is moved to maintain the pawli-n an inactive position.
5. In combination in a document holder, a follower adjustable longitudinallytherein,
a gravity pawl supported by the follower,
' a rack adapted' to be engaged by one eX- tremity of the pawl for locking the follower, and a guide arranged within the path of movement of the other end of the pawl when the follower is adjusted in a direction transverse -to its longitudinal adjustment to' cause the pawl to disengage the rack to release the follower and to maintain .the pawl out of engagement with the rack `whenthe follower is in such,a position to permit a free longitudinal adjustment of the follower.
In testimony whereof I have' signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, on this 15th day of February A'. D. 1908.
