PATENT Frick.
FRANK W. KELSEY, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
HOLDBACK FOR CURTAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming pare of Letters Patent No. 609,965, dated August so, 189s. Appneeeiee ned November 18,1897. serieu Ne. 659,054.. (ne meaei.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. KnLsnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbaoks for Curtains, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to holdbacks for currains such as are usually connected with the p sides of a window-frame for the purpose .of
holding the lower` ends of the curtains at the sides of the window; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be connected with the frame of any window and used wherever devices of this class are requiredyand with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the holders constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. l
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a front View of a window provided with curtains and my improved holders therefor; Fig. 2, a front view of one of said holders detached from the windowframe; Fig. 3, a back view thereof; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a'plan wiew of the holder in the position shown in iig. 2.
In the drawings-forming part of this speciiication the separate parts ofmy improvement are designated by the samefnumerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings, reference being made to Fig. 1', I
have shown at 5 the opposite sides of a window-frame and at 6 and 7 the upper and lower' sashes mounted therein. I have also shown at 8 a pair of curtains which are suspended from a pole 9, and in the practice of my invention I provide holdbacks for the lower ends of the cnrtains, which are adapted to be connected with the sides 5 of the windowframe `and which consist ofa plate 10, in connectionwith which is formed `a, projection provided with a recess forming a keeper 11, and I also provide a curved arm 12, the form of which is shown in Figs. 2 and 5, and this arm 12 is provided at one end with a downwardly-directed spindle 13, the lower end of which is reduced in size, as shown at 14, and mounted on said spindle within the keeper 11 is a spiral spring 15, one end of which is connected with the upper part of the reduced portion 14 of the spindle 13, as shown at 16, and the other end of which is connected with the keeper 11 orthe plate 10, as shown at 17.
The upper end of the projection forming the keeper 11 is provided at the front thereof with an upwardly-directed lug or projection 18, and the operation will be readily under-- stood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The lower end of the spindle13 is arranged within a suitable socket 19 in the bottom of the keeper 11, said socket being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and said spindle is adapted to move upwardly and downwardly in said keeper and is held in its lowest position by the spring 15, and said spring is also adapted to turn the arm 12; but the turning of the arm 12 is prevented by the lug or projection 18 at thev upper end of the keeper, and when it is desired to connect the curtains with said holdbacks, as shown in the drawings, the arms 12 thereof are moved upwardly against the downward pressure of the spring 15 and turned inwardly against the tension of said spring, and said curtains are drawn back and the arms 12 swung outwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1 and are held in this postion by the springs 15. The springs 1,5 hold the arms 12 pressed against the curtains, and 'whenever it is desired to adjust, fold, or arrange the curtains in any desired position the arms 12 are raised and turned inwardly and are held by the lugs or projections -18, and after the curtains have been ,properly arranged said arms are raised above the lugs or projections 18 and are then. thrown outwardly by the springs 15. I
e My improvement is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to ac- The spindle 13 may be of the same size throughout, if desired, and this device may be used in connection With portires and other drapery, as Well as in connection with Window-curtains.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A holder for curtains and other drapery, oomprisin g an oblong plate or support which is adapted to be secured to a Window or other frame, said plate being provided With a longitudinal keeper formed on or secured to one side thereof, and open at its upper end, a spindle mounted in said keeper and projecting above the same, a spring mounted on said spindle Within said keeper, one end of which is secured to the spindle, and the other to the keeper, said spring being adapted to turn said spindle outwardly, and a curved arm conneeted With the upper end of said spindle, said keeper being also provided at its upper end With Aa lug or projection, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 15th day of November, 1897.
FRANK W. KELSEY.
