BUGGY-BOOT ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,565, dated January 10, 1905.
Application filed September 19, 1904. Serial No. 225,088.
To all ich/0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Boot Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to buggy-boots, and has for its object to provide a device of this class which is particularly simple in construction, easy and cheap to manufacture, strong, durable, and efficient.
With this object in View my invention consists in the novel construction of the buggyboot attachment, and particularly in the arrangement of the holding spring and arm.
My invention also consists in certain combinations of parts which will be first fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary View of the buggyboot, the top being in a raised position and the buggy-boot attachment in elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the buggy-boot attachment.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the two figures, in which- 1 indicates the buggy-boot, and 2 the seat of the buggy. The said buggy-boot is provided with a top 3, which is covered with leather 4, the said leather forming the hinge 5 for the top and allows said top to be raised, as shown in Fig. 1. Secured within the boot at both sides thereof and in a convenient position is the plate 6, which is secured to the buggy by means of screws 7, located as shown. Formed preferably integral with the plate 6 is the curved spring 8, which is provided near its lower end with a curved raised portion 9. Pivoted to the plate 6 between the screws 7 is the arm 10, which is provided with a knob or projection 11. Said arm is bent upwardly at 12 and again bent downwardly at 13, so that the portions 111 and 15 of the said arm are substantially parallel, as shown in Fig. 1.
16 indicates a clip secured to the buggy-boot top 3, through which clip the portion 14 of the arm 10 passes.
Having thus described the several parts of my invention, its operation lis as follows: The normal position of the buggy-boot top 3 is that shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, in which position of the said top the arm 10 is also in the position shown in dotted lines invFig. 1 and also shown in perspective in Fig. 2, the knob or projection 11 being in front of the curved projecting portion 9 of the spring 8, the said spring 8 having a normal tendency to press upwardly. The said knob or projection 11 is securely held in front of the curved projection 9 of the spring 8, as is obvious. However, when the buggy-boot top 3 is raised, as shown in Fig'. 1, the knob or projection 11 of the arm 10 is carried over the projection 9 on the spring 8 into the Vposition shown in Fig. 1, the said spring 8, pressing up against the said knob or projection, holding the arm in a raised position, the device being arranged so that the spring 8 holds the arm both in a raised and lowered position, according of course as the knob or projection 11 is on one side or the other of the projection 9 of the spring 8.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction as herein set forth, as various slight changes may be made therein by those skilled in theyart which would fall within the limit and scope of my inventionand I consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. In a buggy-boot attachment, the combination of a plate and means for securing the same within the buggy-boot, a spring formed integrally on said plate and provided with a curved projection near the end thereof, an arm pivoted to said plate and provided with a knob or projection adapted to be engaged by the said projection on the said spring and IOO means secured to the buggy-boot top to be engaged by said arnn substantially as described.
2. In a buggy-boot attachment, the combination of a spring secured Within the buggyboot, and provided with a curved projection near the end thereof, an arm pivoted in proximity to said spring and provided with a knob or projection adapted to be engaged by the said projection on the said spring, and means IG secured to the buggy-boot top to be engaged by said arm, substantially as described.
