AUGUSTUS (3., A. PERKES, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
PAPER-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,750, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed January 10, 1888. Serial No. 260,339. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, AUGUSTUS O. A. PERKES, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Paper-File, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved file or clip adapted for conveniently filing newspapers, letters, invoices, bills, and the like.
The invention consists of two wire frames hinged together and pressed one on top of the other by a spring, and of pins or spikes held on the under frame and adapted to pass through the paper to be filed between the two frames.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line a; :r of Fig. 1, showing the frames swung open. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation'of the same on the line 3 11 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of one end. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of part of a modified form of the improvement, and Fig. 6 is a sectional side elevation of the same.
The main or bottom frame, A, is preferably made of wire rods B 0, connected with each other at their ends by the bars D and D. Between the two bars B and O is held a central bar, E, secured to the end bars, D and D, by T-pieces E, made of sheet metal soldered over the bars D, D, and E. On the outer end bar, B, of the main frame is secured an apertured plate, F, extending rearwardly and serving to hang up the entire file on a hook or convenient projection secured on the wall or other suitable place.
.On the main or bottom frame, A, is hinged the top frame, G, consisting of the bar G, extending on top of the central bar, E, and provided at its ends with the short arms H, hinged on the outer end bar, B, of the main frame A, as shown in the drawings. The top frame, G,
can thus swing out-ward from the main or bottom frame, A, and for this purpose is provided in its middle with a finger-piece, I, made of a piece of wire secured to the bar G and extending into the part J, hinged on. the end bar, B,of the main frame, so that the said top frame, G, is strengthened. The top frame, G, is pressed toward the main or bottom frame, A, by means of springs K coiled on the ends of the bar 13 and extending onto the bar G, as shown in the drawings. The springs K have a tendency to press the said frame G toward the frame A. a
On the bar G of the frame G are secured the shields L, each provided on its under side with a recess, L, into which can pass the pointed ends of the pins N, secured to the central bar, E, of the main frame A, and projecting upward from the same.
The modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is specially adapted for larger files, and is provided on the frame A with raised steps or bearings 0, each consisting of the Ushaped rod 0, secured to the end of the rear bar, B, and of the L-shaped rod 0 secured with one end to the cross-bar D or D, respectively, and with its other end to the rod 0. on the rods 0 of the steps 0 are mounted to swing the arms H H of the frame G, and on the said rods 0 are also secured the springs K for pressing the frame G downward toward the main frame A.
The rods 0 act as braces for the rods 0 and also prevent the paper to be filed from passin g too far to the rear. The shields L, secured to the bar G of the swinging frame A, are preferably tubular for large files, and the inner ends of the arms H are bent downward so as to be level with the lower ends of the shields.
The operation is as follows: In order to file papers, it is necessary to swing the top frame, G, outward from the main frame A by taking hold of the finger-piece I with one finger and lifting it upward. The operator then places the back of the paper on the upwardly-projecting pins N and then releases his hold on the finger-piece I, so that the springs K force the top frame, G, downward toward the main frame A, whereby the bar G comes in contact with the paper placed on the pins N and presses the paper on the said pins. The upper ends of the pins N enter the recesses L of the shield L, whereby the paper is securely held in place, being clamped between the bars G and E.
It will be seen that the pointed ends of the pins N having entered the recesses of the shields L do not protrude, and are consequently securely shielded, so as to prevent injury to the operators when handling the file. The pins N may be of any desired length, so as to accommodate the desired number of papers between the bars G and E. The pins N are preferably straight, but may be slightly curved, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a paper-file, the combination, with a main frame provided with upwardly-project ing pins, of a top frame hinged to the rear of said main frame, and springs wound around the main frame and bearing on the top frame, whereby said top frame is pressed toward the main frame, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a paper-file, the combination, with a main frame, of a top frame hinged on the said main frame, springs for pressing the said frame toward the main frame, pins projecting upwardly from the said main frame, and shields held on the said top frame for covering the pointed ends of the said pins, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a paper'file, a main frame consisting of side rods connected at their ends by crossbars, and a central bar secured to the said end bar by T-pieces, in combination with a raised step secured to the main frame, a top frame hinged on the said step, springs for pressing the said top frame toward the main frame, pins projecting from the said main frame, and shields held on the said top frame for covering the pointed ends of the said pins, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a paper-file, the combination, with a main frame provided with an apertured plate, and pins projecting upward from the said main frame, of a top frame hinged on the said main frame, springs for pressing the said top frame toward the said main frame, recessed shields secured to the said top frame and adapted to receive the pointed ends of the said pins, and a finger-piece held on the said top frame and serving to operate the said top frame, substantially as shown and described.
