IMPRUVEH ADJUSTABLE BED-BCTTOM The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ELIHU HOAG, of Coxsackie, in the county of Greene, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Adj ustable'Bed-Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, land exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the ait to make and use the same, reference being'had to the accompanying drawing, forining part of this specification.

The figure is a vertical-longitudinalsection' of a bedstead, to which my improvement has been attached.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention has for its object to improve the construction of bed-bottoms, in .such a way, that the part of' the bed-bottom toward the head of the vbedstead may be conveniently and gently raised and lowered, and securely held at anyl desired angle, for convenience in changing the position of invalide; and

It consists in the combination of the cams, shaft, ratchet-wheel, and leverf-pawl, with the movable hinged partA of the bed-bottom, and with the bedstead, as hereinafter more fully described.

A represents the posts,-

B, the end-rails, and

C', the side-rails of the bedstead, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new.

D is the stationary, or foot-part ofthe bed-bottom, which is formed of springslats, resting upon'cleats attached to the inner sides of the side-rails of the bed stea( E is the upper, or head-part of the' bed-bottom,

which is formed by `attaching the ends of spring crossslats e# to the longitudinal side-bars e2.

The lower ends of the side-bars er are vhinged to the upper ends of the side-cleats of the lower, or station ary part of the bed-bottom, as shown in the figure.

lThe side-bars c2 rest upon the cams F, attachedto the shaft G, which extends across the head-part of the bedstead, and the journals of which revolve in bearings in the side-rails O of said bedstead.

' In the end of one ofthe journals of the shaft G, is formed a square socket, to receive the stem of the crank H, by means of which the said shaft is operated, so that the said crank may be conveniently detached, Aand laid aside when not'required for use.

To the shaft G is attached a ratchet-wheel, I, upon the teeth of which the pawl J takes hold, to hold the shaft G stationary, and the hinged part E ofsthe bed# bottom securely, at any angle to which it may be raised.

The rear end of the lever-pawlJ is bent upward, as shown in the figure, so that it may be conveniently reached and operated, to release the ratchet-wheel I, when it is desired to wholly or partially lower the part E of the bed-bottom. y
