To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. KNisELY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing` at Bartlesville, in the county of /Vashingtonn and State of Oklahoma, have invented metallic trough which may be used in conjunction with the wooden troughs now in common use and having means whereby they may be attached to blackboards independent of the ordinary wooden troughs.

The invention is designed to be used without removing any of the old furnishings in school houses which are now in existence, but the primary object of the invention is to provide a substitute metallic trough to be used alone in new buildings.

The metallic trough forming the subject matter of this invention may be readily attached to the wall or blackboard and comprises a relatively deep channel to collect the dust, the opening to the channel being restricted in order that the dust which may gain access to the channel may not be disturbed until the trough is cleaned. This trough has an adjustable opening which, under ordinary conditions of use will be quite narrow compared with the width of the channel proper, but when the trough is to be cleaned. the restricted opening may be enlarged to permit the insertion of a cleaning implement or brush to facilitate the removal of the dust which is collected.

A further object of this invention is to provide a trough capable of supporting the erasers, said trough having a Series of braces extending from a top iiange of the trough to the base thereof. Y

`With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1, is a sectional view of a blackboard with an ordinary wooden trough having the invention applied thereto Fig. 2, is a front view thereof, a fragment of the trough being shown; Fig. 3, is a sectional view similar to Fig. 1, except that the wooden trough is omitted and the metallic trough is attached to the blackboard; Fig. 4, is a front view thereof; and Fig. 5, is a view similar to Fig. 8, except that the trough adjusting screw is utilized as a means for attaching the trough to the blackboard.

ln the drawing A, denotes an ordinary blackboard and B, a wooden trough therefor having a metallic trough C, seated in the wooden trough and secured thereto by the screws c.

From an inspection of Fig. 1, it will be seen that the trough has walls O which converge and produce a restricted openingD, to permit the entrance of chalk dust. The walls are provided with apertures for the reception of the screw E, by which the walls are adjusted with relation to each other to vary the size of the opening D, to suit the requirements of practice. The walls O, O, terminate in flanges F, G, the former extending rearwardly and the latter extending forwardly to form a support for the chalk and erasers. The forwardly extending flange forms a ledge inclined toward the blackboard so that the tendency will be to direct the chalk toward the blackboard and prevent it from rolling off the ledge. lt is preferable that the opening D, shall be of such a size as to prevent the chalk rom passing through to the interior of the trough. A series of braces such as H, may be provided, terminating under the outer edge of the iiange G, and extending downwardly on an incline to the base of the chalk trough where it is secured to the surface of the outer wall O.

ln Fig. 3, the trough I, has the converging walls I, I', the flange G', the brace H', and ange F', corresponding to like parts in Fig. 1 and the construction is the same except that the iiange F instead of having its edge in engagement with the blackboard is provided with a flange F2, lying parallel with the blackboard and secured thereto by the screws F3, passing through an aperture f, in the iiange F2. The screw E', in this device is designed for the same purpose as the screw E, in the form shown in Fig. l.

As shown in Fig. 5, I may utilize the screw E2 as a means for adjusting the osition of the walls I ,lI, and as a means o' attaching the trough to the blackboard. In this construction the aperture f of the llange will be located in horizontal alinement with the apertures in the converging walls of the trough and the same screw that holds the walls in position will pass through the flange and hold the trough on the blackboard.

The term chalk as used in the foregoing specification is meant to include any crayon, pencil, or like writing implement to be used in connection with blackboards.

I claim 1. An attachment for blackboards comprising a trough with adjustable walls, means for adjusting the walls of the trough with relation to each other, and means for securing the trough in place.

2. An attachment for black-boards comprising a trough having adjustable converging walls, means for adjusting the walls with relation to each other, and flanges forming extensions of the upper edges of the walls.

3. An attachment for blackboards comprising a trough having adjustable converging apertured Walls, a screw in the apertures for adjusting the Walls with relation to each other, and flanges forming extensions of the upper edges of the walls.

4. An attachment for blaekboards oomprising a trough having adjustable converging apertured walls, a screw in the apertures for adjusting the walls with relation to each other, flanges forming extensions of the upper edge of the walls, and braces for supporting one of said flanges.

5. An attachment for blackboards comprising a trough having adjustable converging apertured walls, a screw in the apertures for adjusting the walls with relation to each other, flanges forming extensions of the upper edge of the walls, braces for supporting one of said flanges, and means for attaching the other flange to a fixed obj ect.

6. An attachment for blackboards comprising a trough having adjustable side Walls and means for adjusting the walls to restrict the opening therebetween.
