UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JERE A. CLlFFORD, OF
BUTTE, MONTANA.
BILLIARD-TABLE-CLOTH FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed llovember 17, 1906.
Patented Aug. 27, 1907.
Serial No. 343,877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN the United States, residing at Butte, Silverbow and State of Montana,
COHEN, a citizen of in the county of have invented a new and useful llilliard-'ITable-Oloth Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates table cloth fasteners. The object of the to improvements in billiard present invention is to improve the construction of billiard table cloth fastening means, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and GfllCiOIli) construction adapted to enable the cloth of a billiard table to be put on and taken off in a very few minutes, without wearing or tearing the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide billiard table cloth fasten ing means, adaptedto enable the cloth to be readily stretched over the bed of the table,
and to be tight condition.
securely fastened to the same in a smooth and With these and other objects inview, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully companying drawing, hereto appended; it
described, illustrated in the acand pointed out in the claims being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within resorted to without departing the scope of the claims, may be from the spirit or sacri- [icing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:-Figure the billiard table provided with portion of the bed of 1 is a side elevation of a fastening means, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a same. stantially on the line perspective view oi one Like numerals of reference horizontal sectional view of the Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken sub- 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail of the cloth-engaging strips. designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
1 designates a billiard table bed, constructed of slate, marble, or other suitable material, and consisting preferably of slabs in the ordinary manner.
The bed 1,
which receives the cloth 2, is arranged on a wooden base or support 3, which is rectangular and of the same area as the bed, the side edges of the base being flush with the side edges of the bed, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The base or bottom section 3 is provided at its side and end edges with grooves 4, rear walls and open at the having top, bottom and front to receive cloth-engaging strips 5, which force the cloth into the grooves, as
clearly illustrated in the cloth is evenly and tightly stretched over the of the table. The strips,
Fig. 3 of the drawing, whereby bed which may be of any desired length, may be constructed of hickory, bamboo, or any, other suitable material, and they are secured to the base or bottom section of the bed by means of screws 6,
which engage inner interiorly and extcriorly threaded sleeves 7, forming nuts. The sleeves 'Z are screwed in sockets or openings of the base or bottom section 3 at the rear wall of the groove. The screws engage the interior threads of the sleeve 7, and the exterior threads thereof firmly retain the sleeves in the sockets or openings of the said base or bottom section. The screws, which are preferably provided with flat heads and which are counter-sunk in the cloth-engaging strips, also engage outer sleeves 8, which are interiorly and exteriorly threaded and which are mounted in the cloth-engaging strips. The outer sleeves 8 extend from the outer to the inner faces of the cloth-engaging strip and the outer portions of their bores or openings are enlarged to receive the heads of the screws. The screws, which icngage the interior threads of the outer sleeves enable the strips to be readily detached and the cloth of a billiard or pool table may be removed and replaced within a few minutes without wearing or tearing the same. This will enable the cloth oi a billiard table 7 5 to be conveniently removed and thoroughly cleaned every two or three months, or at other short intervals, and the life of the cloth will thereby be greatly increased.
In order to prevent the strips 5 from injuring the cloth, they are covered at their inner vertical faces and top and bottom faces with thin sheets 9 of rubber, or other elastic material, which presents a smooth surface to the cloth and yieldably engages the same.
The corners 10 of the cloth-engaging strips may be mitered, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, or they may be leit square, if preferred.
Although the cloth fastening device is shown in the accompanying drawing applied to the bed of a billiard or pool table, yet it will be readily apparent that the improvements are applicable to various kinds of tables, where the cloth is drawn over a bed portion and secured at the edges thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. In a table of the class described, the combination with a bed provided at its side and end edges with grooves having top and bottom walls, of clotheugaging strips arranged within the grooves and adapted to secure a cloth to the bed.
2. In a table of the class described, the combination of a bed provided at its side and end edges with grooves having top and bottom walls, and cloth-engaging; strips detachably secured within the grooves and adapted to clamp a cloth on the bed.
3. In a table of the class described, the combination of a bed provided at its edges with grooves, cloth-engaging strips detachably fitted in the grooves and adapted to detachably clamp a cloth on a table, and fastening devices piercing the strips and adjustably securing the same to the bed.
4. In a table of the class described, the combination of a bed provided in its edges with grooves having top, bottom and rear walls, inner sleeves seated in the rear Walls of the grooves, cloth-engaging strips detachably fitted in the grooves and adapted to clamp the cloth on the table, outer sleeves mounted in the strips, and fastening devices pass ing through the outer sleeves and engaging the inner sleeves for securing the strips in the grooves.
In a table of the class described, the combination of a bed provided at its edges With grooves having top, bottom and rear walls, cloth-engaging strips detachabiy fitted in the grooves for clamping outer interiorly respectively gaging the interior threads of both of the sleeves.
a cloth on the bed, inner and and exteriorly threaded sleeves mounted in the bed and in the strips, and screws en-' 6. In a table of the class described, the combination of a bed provided with grooves having top, bottom and rear Walls, clotlrengaging strips fitted in the grooves and provided at their upper, lower and inner faces with sheets of elastic material presenting yieldable faces to the cloth, and means for securing the strips to the bed.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my have hereto affixed my signature in the presence witnesses.
own, I of two BENJAMIN COHEN. Witnesses JOSEPH P. CALLAN,
