Description

UNITED STATES' 4FREDERICK POLLARD, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
eHow-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,093, dated January 8,1895. Application filed August 31, 1894:. Serial llo. 521,782. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK POLLARD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and StateV of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show- Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a show-case constructed entirely of glass plates, with the probable exception of the bottom and back side, said plates being held firmly and securely in position by means of suitable screws, brackets, and bolts.
The object of my improvement is to provide a handsome and serviceable show-case without resorting either to a wooden or metallic frame for retaining the glass plates composing said case, in position, since the former soon gets scratched and looks shabby while the latter tarnishes readily, requiring much labor to keep the same clean. n
That my invention may be seen and fully understood by others, reference will be had to the following specication and annexed drawings forming a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a front view of my show-case; Fig. 2, a rear View of said case; Fig. 3, aplan view of the same; Fig. 4, an end view; Fig. 5, a cross-section on lines cc, Fig. 2; Fig. 6, a full size, side view of one of the brackets and bolts, and Fig. 7, a sectional view of the same. Similar gures of reference designate like parts in the drawings and specification.
The show-case shown in the drawings consists of the front plate 1, the end plates 2, 2, and the top plate 3, all of glass, with the base 4, the frame 5, and the oor 6, of wood. rlhe sliding doors 7, 7 operate in theframe 5 and the slabs 8, of marble or other material, are screwed to the front and ends of the base 4. The glass plates 1 and 2, 2 rest upon the base 4 and are held in place at the bottom by the slabs 8 on the outside, and the cleats 9 which are secured to the iioor`6 inside of said plates.
The glass plate Srests upon the top of the f. plates 1 and 2, 2 and of the frame 5 which is located between the rear ends of said plates 2,2. To form tight joints and obviate frictional contact, the cement filling 10 is inserted between the edges and surfaces of `the plates 1, 2, 2, and 3 adjacent to each other and to cleats 9.
Felt, or other suitable material, may be em-y ployed in" place of the cement filling 10, or the two may be used together. The lateral edges of the plate 1 project a little beyond the plates 2, 2, but this is not an essential feature of my invention.
The screws 11, the brackets 12, and the bolts 13 are used to secure the plates l, 2, 2, and 3 in position. Each bolt 13 is provided with the washers 14, 14 and the tube 15 of rubber or other soft material, and with the nut 16. Similar washers 14 and tubes 15 are applied to the screws 1l. The screws 11 are utilized in fastening the plates 2, 2 and to the top and sides of the frame 5, holes having been drilled first in said plates, large enough to receive said screws and the tubes 15. Between the head of each screw 11- and the glass is placed a washer 14`and another washer is inserted between said glass and the frame 5. Thetop plate 3 is rigidly attached to the front platel and the end plates 2, 2, and said end plates are rigidly attached to said front plate by means of the brackets 12, the bolts 13, and the nuts 16. Holes are first drilled in the glass plates 1, 2,2, and 3 in their proper places, and the bolts 13 are inserted therein,l each of said bolts having one washer 14 and the tube 15 encircling the same. The tubes 15 snugly fit the holes in the plates 1,-2, 2, and 3. After placing the second washer' 14 on each bolt13 the angular brackets 12 having therein lthe openings 12, are placed in position on adJacent bolts and secured there by the nuts 16. The tubes 15 and the washers 14 separate the Shanks and heads of the bolts 13, and the brackets 12 from actual contact with the glass plates and thereby prevent friction, at the same time forming tight joints, as do the washers and tubes on the screws 11.
Show-cases constructed in the manner hereinbefore described may vary in size and shapev to suit the taste and convenience ofthe user and more or less than the four plates 1, 2, 2,J and 3 may be employed in constructing the same, without departing from the nature of my'invention. In a triangular case three glass plates only are required, but ordinarily fouror more would be the number necessary.
The number of screws 1l, brackets 12, and
the frame 5, the base 4, the slabs 8, and the I IOO bolts 173 will also vary according to the requirements.
The frame 5 may be dispensed with and a glass plate substituted therefor, if desired, in which event said plate will be secured to the top and end plates with the brackets l2 and the bolts 13, as before described, and entrance had throughthe bottom. The door may also be of glass. For an ordinary showcase, how ever, the form shown in the drawings is considered to be the best.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a show case, a base, a frame, and perforated glass plates forming the top, front, and ends of said case, in combination with brackets, screws passing through the perforaets, washers and tubes of soft material encir-v cling said screws and bolts to prevent contact between the same and the glass, and a tillin'g between the adjacent edges of said plates, base;l and frame, substantially as andfor the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a show case, of a oor, a frame having doors therein, the outside slabs 8 and the inside cleats 9, perforated glass plates forming the top, front, and ends of said case, brackets, screws passing through the perforations in said plates into said frame,
bolts passing through said perforations and said brackets, washers and tubes encircling said screws and bolts, and a filling between the adjacent edges and surfaces of the several parts', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix 'my signature inl presence of two witnesses. tions in said plates into said frame, bolts pass- 1 iugthrough said p'erforations and said brack- FRDRICK POLLARD.
