Be it known that I, WViLLIAM S. Mnvnns, a subject of the-King of Great Britain, residing at Fort William, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys, the object in view being to provide an instructive toy with movable parts which are mechanically operated as the toy, as a whole is pulled or otherwise propelled along the floor or ground, thereby adding to the lifelike ap pearance of the toy.

IVith the above general object in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is aperspective view of the toy. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the jaws of the animals figure open. Fig. 4 is a detail section showing a modified form of joint between the head and body of the animals figure.

The toy contemplated in this invention consists of the well known figure of John Bull indicated at 1 and representing Great Britain, mounted upon the figure of a lion shown at 2, emblematic of the British Empire, the lion being mounted fast upon a base board 3 supported by wheels 4, adapting the toy -to be drawn by means of a cord or string 5.

The figure 1 may be made of wood or any suitable material or composition used in the manufacture of toys. Under one arm of the figure there will be placed a battle ship 6 while a cannon 7 will be placed under the other arm of the figure 1, the parts 6 and 7 being emblematic of the British navy. The figure of the lion may also be composed of any suitable material or composition used in the manufacture of toys and may be either smooth throughout or the head and shoulder and neck may be covered with hair or a hairlike substance to represent the lions mane.

The lions mouth is made to open and close by making the head to consist of a separate section as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and a and pivotally connecting said head including the upper jaw to the lower jaw by means of a pivot 8. In the preferred embodiment of Specification of Letters Patent.

the invention, the remainder of the head is connected to the body by means of a bellows joint as shown at 9 and the joint 9 is covered with hair or material having the appearance of hair as shown at 10, said hair being secured in any convenient manner to the head and also to the reversely inclined portions of the bellows folds as shown in Fig. 2, thereby effectually concealing the joint between the head and body. The cord or string 5 passes through an eye or guide 11 at the front of the base board 3 and is branched, one branch passing under a pulley 12 and then upward where it is fastened shown at 13 to the rear portion of the head section just above the bellows joint.

It will be seen that by pulling the cord 5 the rear portion of the head section of Fig. 2 will be depressed, thereby opening the jaws of the lion and imparting to the lion a ferocious appearance.

1% designates a spring which acts to close the jaw after being opened by the string The tail 15 of the lions figure passes through an opening in the body and is provided with a lever extension or tail operating arm 16, the tail being pivoted at 1.7 so as to swing up and down. The other branch 18 of the cord or string 5 passes along beneath the base board 3 and under a second pulley 19 then upward where it connects to the tail operating arm 16 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Therefore, when the cord or string 5 is pulled it operates simultaneously on the head'and tail of the lion, opening the lions jaw and elevating the tail thus adding still more to the ferocious and life-like appearance of the toy as a whole. In a cheaper form of the toy, the bellows oint- 9 may be dispensed with and the break or joint between the head and body may be covered with hair or hair-like substance as shown at 10' in Fig. 4:, the hair being attached to the head section overlapping the joint so as to ride against the body of the figure. The head section is so arranged that the neck is made in telescopic section, the smaller or head section being adapted to work down within the main body or shoulder portion of the animal, the bodybeing hollow to receive the head section and admit of such movement thereof.

The battle ship and cannon may be sawed out of wood of suitable thickness and painted according to the desire of the manufacturer or said parts may be formed of any its other suitable material, left either flat or rounded off and suitably painted or colored, which is left to the discretion of the manu- 'Facturer.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is z- 1. A mechanical toy embodying a wheel supported base board, a figure of a lion mounted on said board and comprising a movable head section, including the upper jaw, and a pull cord, connected with the base board and also connected with the movable head section, said cord operating on the head section to open the lions jaw, substantially as described.

2. A mechanical toy embodying a base board mounted on wheels, the figure of a lion mounted on said base board and comprising a movable head section including the upper jaw and pivoted to the body adjacent the lower jaw, a covering of hair-like material extending over the joint between the head section and body, and a pull cord connected with the base board and head section and adapted to move the head section to open the jaws of the figure, substantially as described.

A toy embodying a wheeled base board, a lions figure mounted thereon and embodying a pivotally mounted head section, a bellows oint connecting the head sections and body, a covering of hair-like material eX- tending over said joint and a cord for pulling the base board along, said cord being connected with the movable head section, substantially as and for the purpose described.

l. A mechanical toy comprising a wheeled base board, a hollow lions figure mounted 011 said base board and embodying a movable head section adapted to open at the jaw line, and a pivoted tail section, and a pull cord associated with the base board to draw the figure along and connected with the head section and tail section whereby in propelling the figure motion is imparted to the head and tail, substantially as described.

I. A toy embodying a wheeled base board, the figure of a lion mounted on said board,

a figure representing John Bull mounted on the lion and representations of a battle ship and cannon carried beneath the arms of the figure, the figure of the lion embodying movable head and tail sections, and a pull cord connected with the head and tail sections and adapted to move the same relatively to the body of the lion in the act of drawing the toy.
