Description

Cil
Patented May 16, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC 4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in toys and more especially a toy which may be in the form of a head of an animal or human and provided with lips, jaws, bill, or the like.
The particular feature of the invention is the making of such a device adapted to be comnpressed, which, upon compression, will emit a sound and open the jaws.
The toy may take a .great variety of shapes and forms. For the purpose of illustrating the invention I have here shown it as embodied in a device resembling a ducks head in which the two jaws form a bill. It is to be understood, however, that my invention is not to be limited to this particular form.
One of the jaws carries a reed and the head is hollow so that when it is compressed, air will be emitted through a small orifice to direct a jet of air against the reed to make a sound. This sound, for example, may resemble the call of a duck.
I have here shown the toy mounted on the top of a cane to assist in giving a vertical compression to the head when the han-d is pressed downwardly on the top to operate the same.
A device embodying the features of my invention can be easily and cheaply made and is very entertaining. It should form a very attractive novelty, especially for children, and others at Carnivals, fairs, exhibitions and the like.
Other features and advantages will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section, showing the device compressed; Fig. 3 is a top plan view; Fig. 4 is a View taken as indicated by the line 4 of Fig.
o 3; and Fig. 5 is a View taken as indicated by the line 5 of Fig. 4.
As shown in the drawing, the toy comprises primarily a hollow compressible elastic member IIJ preferably made of rubber or the like. As here shown, it is in the form of the head of a duck and may comprise essentially a hollow rubber ball.
II and I2 indicate upper and lower jaws respectively, attached to the member I0 in any suitable manner. For example, the jaws may be built up or molded of rubber or other suitable material and attached to the member I0 in any suitable manner. For example, in making the device I have actually taken an ordinary rubber ball and molded the jaws II and I2 thereon by (Cl. Lifi- 117) building up the same with rubber cement until the jaws were completely formed on the ball.
As here shown, the upper jaw II is hollowed out at the bottom and carries the reed I3, the free end of which lies near the ball, the outer end being attached to the outer end of the upper jaw II. As here shown, the jaws II and I2 are made to resemble the bill of a duck.
I4 indicates a small pipe inserted through the wall of the ball I0 between the jaws and a-dapted 1 to direct a jet of air against the free end I3a of the reed I3 when the ball is squeezed. This vibrates the reed, causing it to sound.
It will be seen from Fig. 2 that collapsing of the member I0 (especially more or less in a veri5 tical direction) will not only serve to sound the reed but also will operate to cause the jaws to open. The result is that when the head is collapsed the jaws will open and the sound will issue therefrom. Upward movement of the bottom portion 50 of the device raises the point 5I as shown by the broken lines in Fig. 4 and also as indicated in Fig. 2. This causes the extreme innner portion of the lower bill to rock in the nature of a lever so that the part as indicated 2- by 52 is swung downwardly, causing the lower bill to swing downwardly to open the jaws.
As here shown, I have imbedded a stiifening member Ila made of Wood or similar material in the upper jaw II and have attached the outer end of the reed I3 to said member by means of the clamp I5.
As here shown the member I0 is provided on its lower surface with a cap or ferrule I6 to permit its ready attachment to the upper end of the cane Il. In Fig. 2 the reference numeral I8 is used to indicate a hand pressing downwardly on the top of the ball to compress the same.
While there are shown and described certain embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is intended to claimall novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as permissible, in View of the prior art.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A device o-f the character described, including: a hollow collapsible member having an orice therein, whereby air will issue from said orifice when the member is collapsed; means for causing sound to be produced by air issuing from said orifice; and a pair of jaws carried by said 10 lying adjacent the orifice in the collapsible member.
4. A device of the character described, including: a hollow collapsible member having an orice therein whereby air will issue from said orice when the member is collapsed; a pair of jaws carried by said member, said jaws adapted to be opened by collapsing of said member; a reed carried by one o1" said jaws; and means for directing a jet of air issuing from said orice against said reed to vibrate the same when the member is collapsed.
