Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1909.
Application filed November 5, 1998. Serial No. 461,125.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac Lawnnxcn, a i citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyincounty of Kings, and State of New York, have inyented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being? had to the accompanying drawing, forming i a part thereof, in which similar characters of I reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to toys; and has for its objectto provide an efiicient means for imparting dancing motion to a jointed figure representation of a person or animal, the; construction of the device being such as to E obviate thefnecessity of employing either springs, or a spring-board. j
A further object of the invention is to pro-'v vide a device of the character named, which comprises detachable and collapsible parts whereby the structure may be readily packed f r transportation.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the annexed claims. j p
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1, is a perspective view illustrating the operation of my improved devicefFig. 2, a side eleva tion thereof shown partly in section; and Fig. 3, is a sectional planview taken on a horizontal line through a slot in the upright support for the platform of the device.
In the practice of my invention I provide primarily an oscillating platform A, which posed of wood and comprising the relatively a slot 3, leading tlierethrough. The said platform is mounted within a lateral recess 6, leading through an upright bearing B, said uprightbearing forming part of a base C. Extended vertically through the upright B, and the slot 3, of the platform A, is av upon the top of the upright B, said pin de! tachably connecting the said platform to the The recess I which leads through the upright B, is of a depth slightly greatervtha-n the thickness of the narrow extension 2, of
platform A, and the slot 3, of said extension of the platform is of suflicient length toallow the platform to normally assume an inclined position approximating that shown by full lines Fig. 2, of the drawings, where by said platform may be caused tooscillatedrawings.
As a means for oscillating the platform A, a loop E, which is preferably composed of cord, is arranged dependent from the free end ofthe extension 2, of the platform A; vertical reciprocating motion imparted to this said loop causes the platform A, to oscillate within a prescribed are, said platform normally assuming an inclined plane extended downwardly from its upright bearing by its own gravity.
The .loop E, for operating the platform A, maybe of any desirable length; the long loop shown by Fig. 1, of the drawings, is employed when the device is operated by foot power, and the short loop shown in Fig. 2, of the drawings, is employed when operating the device by hand.
.In conjunction with the before described device I use a jointed figure as F, having jointed arms G, and legs H and also jointed feet I; the latter named members giving very lifelike appearance to the figure when in motion.
As a means for suspending the toy over the platform A,I employ a, rod J, having a iandle' j, which is adapted to be grasped by the hand of the operator, the end of the rod remote from the said handle being secured to the body of the figure F. A p
In operating the device the same is placed on a table or other support, and the figure is held suspended over the broad end of the platform A, with the feet adjacent to the surface of said platform; then pulling action upon the cord E, raises the platform against the feet of the figure and imparts motion to the limbs.
The device may be operated either by hand or foot; and when foot power is employed thetoy can be made to keep excellent time with the motion of the foot; a musical accompaniment may also be employed in conjunction with the toy. 7
Having thus described my-invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device for imparting dancing movement to a jointed figure, the combination,
with the upright having the vertically extended squared recess leading therethrou h and the horizontal slot, and the base; of tie platform having the squared slot therein,
and the squared. pin engaging said slot and extended into said recess, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a toy, the combination, with the base and the upright having the squared recess leading therethrough and the horizontal slot leading through sald recess, and the platform having the slot therethrough, and the depending cord having a loop for engaging the foot of an operator, and the pin coupling the platform to the upright; whereby all parts may be disassembled, substantially as shown and described. v
3. A separable device for imparting dancing movement to a jointed figure, comprising squared recess leading therethrough and the horizontal slot, and the base, and the platform having the squared slot therein, and the squared pin removably en aging said slot and said recess, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that, I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this 21st day of October 1908.
