JOHN FOSTER STEPHENSON, OF GLENFERRIE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
COMBINATION BEDSTEAD AND MATTRESS.
r Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 29, 1906. Serial No. 350,004.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FOSTER .STE- PHENSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Haines street, Glenferrie, in the State of Victoria, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Bedsteads and Mattresses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has been devisedto provide a combination bedstead and mattress. At present the manner in which the wire mattress is placed on a bedstead is unsatisfactory, inasmuch as that the mattress, lying loosely on the rails of the bedstead easily shakes from its position. It has also been found that after a short use the side members bend or shrink from the pressure applied on the mattress; this causes the parts to strain and in some cases become detached. By the use of my invention the above defects are obviated. The ordinary angle-irons of the bedstead are dispensed with, a considerable saving in the cost of manufacture is effected and a better construction obtained.
In order that my invention may be the more easily understood reference may be made to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan of a bedstead embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation on line 1-2 of Fig. 1, whileFigs. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 show various ways of attaching the metal strap hereinafter referred to.
In these drawings corner blocks A are attached by casting or otherwise to the vertical standards or posts B of the bedstead each block being provided with a female dovetail or socket O. A box D is provided of suitable material (preferably cast iron) and has at its rear a vertical male dovetail or tooth E of such a size as to fit tightly when in position in the socket O. This construction secures the box D to the block A-in a firm mannerthe ends of the wooden side members G of the mattress when in position rest in the hollow portion of their respective boxes and are connected to the latter in any convenient manner preferably by vertical bolts H.
I The means provided for preventing bending of the side members G of the mattress are as follows :To each inner side of members G I attach a metal strap or plate J of sufiicient strength to resist any great pressure which might be applied to the mattress; these plates J are secured to the members G by screws or pins as J. The straps or plates are of length equal to that of the side members and in width preferably about one and a half inches, see Fig. 3, or may in some cases be the full depth of the members G or alternatively they may rest in a cut away portion in manner illustrated on Figs. 4 and 5. The metal plates may be of a plain flat pattern or be corrugated or angled as shown on Figs. 6 and 7.
In order to provide against accidental lifting of the tooth E from the socket O a small clip plate K (perforated at one end K) may be secured in manner shown by an extra screw nut K on the bolt H-this plate K can be moved radially from its holding position when it is desired to remove the said tooth E from the socket C.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with the bedposts and the corner blocks integral therewith and each having a dove-tail socket, of boxes having dove-tail portions engaging said sockets, said boxes having bottom supporting members extending toward each other and parallel vertical flanges, wooden side members resting in the hollow portions of said boxes, vertical bolts passed through said side members and through said bottom supporting members of the blocks, and metal plates attached to the inner sides of said side members, and a clip plate secured upon each bolt and having one end bridging the joints between the corner blocks and boxes and engaging the under sides of the former.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN FOSTER STEPHENSON.
