Be it known that I, STANISLAW KIELAR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Joints and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and .useful improvements in rail jomt and fasbe quickly detached from the ties when.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a rail fastener formed for cotiperation with a tie and arranged with rail engaging parts having detachable interlocking connection with the tie when the rail is operatively positioned upon the latter.

It being understood that the device may be employed, for maintaining any form of ralls upon suitable supporting ties, the same is herein illustrated in connection with a tie 10 having railsll operatively secured thereon The tie 10 is provided with a notch or seat 12 upon which a bed plate 13 securedby means of screws 14, the said bed plate being arranged transversely of the tie and adapted to receive the rails 11 longitudinally positioned thereon;
The bed plate 13 is formed with upstanding lugs 15 arranged in pairs adjacent the opposite ends of the plate and adapted tor receiving thereover the side notches 16 formed in the base flanges 17 of the rails 11 The notches 1 6 are arranged at suitable distances from the free ends of the rails 11 for permitting theiree ends thereof tobe suitably positioned slightly spaced apart when the device is employed as a rail joint, while the notches 16 may be arranged at suitable intervals throughout the length of the rail when the device is emploved for securing intermediately positioned ties to the rail for use upon the road bed.- I v An abutment block 18 is provided I for seating within a longitudinal groove 19 of the tie 10 adjacent the seat 12 0f the tie with the toe 20 of the block positioned within a socket 21 at the outer end of the groove 19, while an angularbearing plate 22 is carried by the bottom of theblock l8 and is provided with a flange 23 for overlying the inher edge 24 of the bottom of the groove 19 for arrangement within a ,recess 25 positioned in the tie adjacent the cutaway side portion 26' of the bed plate 13. The abutment block 18 is closely fitted within the groove 19 and has a shoulder 27 overlying the bed plate and adapted for engaging the web 28 of the rails 1l while oneof the base flanges 17 of each rail projects beneath the shoulder 27. Spacing plates 29 are mounted upon the opposite sides of the rails 11 having portions 30 for overlying the base flange 17 thereof and arranged with downwardly projecting lugs 31 positionable within the notches 16 in alinement with the aforementioned lugs 15 of the bed plate it being understood that the spacing plate 29 at one side of the rails is engaged by the abutment A retaining latch blOCk 32 is provided for engaging within the tie seat, 12 and positioned at the opposite side of the rails from the abutment block 18, a cross piece 33 be ng arranged upon the bottom of the block 32 and having an inclined outer side 3st for positioning Within a groove at the opposite end of the seat 12. One'of the spacing plates 29 will be engaged by the retaining block 32 and with the shoulder portion 36' of such block overlying theadjacent portion of the base flange 17 of the rails 11, when the cross piece 33 is transversely arranged within the seat 12 with the block positioned longitudinally of the tie. 'The outer sloping end 37 of the block 32 is provided with a latch 38 pivoted within a longitudinal slot 39 thereof as at 40, the said latch being adapted for seating within a keeper slot ll adj acently positioned within the upper face of the tie 10 beneath the block 32 when 'operativ'elyfarranged;
It will be seen that the block 18 in position with the rails 11 may be arranged upon the seat 12 in abutting engagement therewith while'the retaining block may then be slidably placed in its position as described with the latch 38' elevated and upon a lowering of the latch within the keeper'slot ll; the
block 32 will be locked against removal and thereby the entire device will be maintained in its operative arrangement securing the rails 11 upon the tie 10.' For detaching the rails, the free end 42 of the latch 38 maybe engaged by a suitable instrument and the latch then removed from the slot .41, permit ting detachment of the block 82 so. that the rails 11 may be separated from the tie 10.
a In therform of the device illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, the same principles of operation are carried out, the tie 10 having'a transverse seat 12 for receiving a rail 11. The abutment block 18' is arranged within a longitudinal groove 19' of the tie and with a shoulder 27 engaging the rail while a plate 22 is carried by the bottom of the block 18 engaging within the bottomo'f the groove 19. An oppositely positioned retaining block 32 is provided with a cross piece 33 for arrangement at V the opposite end of the seat '12 and having a shoulder 36' overlying the rail.

A rail-holding device'comprising altie having-a transverse seat and a longitudinal groove atone side of'the seat, an abutment block removablyj arranged within said groove'adapted for engaging one side of the rail, a retaining block-adapted for engaging the opposite side of the rail and provided with a crosspiece fitted within said seat adjacent the base flange of the rail and a locking latch swingingly carried by said retaining block adapted for connection with the tie when the device is assembled.
