Be it known thatL CnAnn-ns LEWIS, a citizen of theUnited statesfand aresident of Burlington, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Railroad-Tie, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de: scription. I
My invention relates to railroad ties, and has reference more particularly to a tie comprising a casing. filled with ballast.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and inexpensive railroad tie which has detachable-railattaching means' whereby rails can beeasily and quickly replaced, and which attaching means willprevent lateral displacement of the rails on the tie.
A further object of the invention is to provide removable reinforcing members adapted to cooperate with the rail securing means whereby the rail is positively locked to the tie.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a railway tie embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3- 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. l is a fragmentary bottom view of the tie with the bottom plate removed.
Referring to the drawings, 5 represents an elongated hollow casing tapering slightly toward the bottom to facilitate the filling of the casing with ballast. The bottom of the casing is open and fitsinto a bordered base plate 6, which borders prevent the casing 5 from moving on the base plate. Se
cured 'to the top of the casing adjacent each end is a rail bed 7 one of the beds having an integral flange 8 adapted to engage one side of the base of the rail. An under-cut groove 9 is provided at the other end of the rail bed central with the flange 8. Fitting snugly into said under-cut groove is a rail clamp 10. the casing and having sidewall extensions 16 inclined or beveled the same as the sides of the casing 5, so as to, snugly fit thereinto. The'depth or height of the reinforcing member 14 is that of the depth of the casing 5,
so that the reinforcing member also rests on the base plate 6. The rib 13 projects from the wall 15 of the reinforcing member and is thicker at the bottom than at the top, as best shown in Fig. 3.
The tie is formed as follows: The casing 5 s placed with its open bottom up. Each reinforcing, member 14 is placed at a correspondmg opening 12; the ballast is poured into the casing; the base plate 6 is then placed over the casing and secured thereto by any suitable means. The tie so formed is ready to receive rails on its rail beds 7. The rails can then be engagedby the correspondmg rail clamps 10 which are then looked to the tie by means of the spikes 11. The ballast may be concrete, sand or any other similar material.
I claim:
1. In a railway tie, a casing open at the bottom, a base plate engaging the open end of the casing, said plate having borders preventlng the casing from moving on the plate, rail beds on the top of said casing, reinforc ing members within said casing under said beds, rail clamps associated with said beds, and spikes for locking said clamps to the beds, said spikes having means adapted to engage the reinforcing members whereby the spikes are locked to the casing.
2. In a railway tie, a downwardly tapered casing open at the bottom, a bordered base plate engaging the open end to prevent the casing from moving on the plate, rail beds associated with the top of the casing, said beds having under-cut grooves, rail clamps fitting into the under-cut grooves, removable reinforcing members within said casing under said bed plates, and spikes for locking forked stem, said reinforcing member having a rib adapted to engage the forked stem of a spike whereby the stem is spread within the casing when forced thereinto.
3. In a railway tie, a downwardly tapered casing open at the bottom, rail beds secured to the top of said casing, reinforcing mem- 'bers fitting snugly intosaid casing transtheclamps are lockedto'thebed, each of the plate.
