Specication of Letters Patent.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WALENTY NALEPKA, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at South Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to metallic ties and rail fasteners, and the primary object of my invention is to provide extremely light and durable ties that can be manufactured at a minimum cost and easily tamped and anchored in a road bed.
Another object of this invention is to furnish a tie with rail fasteners possessing the same gripping power as spikes, said fasteners being arranged whereby they can be repeatedly adjusted to compensate for vibrations.
A further object of my invention is to furnish metallic ties with fasteners that will preserve the alinement of rails and prevent lateral and vertical displacements.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by a mechanical construction that will be presently described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of ties in accordance with this invention, showing certain inner fasteners removed; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of one of the ties and the fasteners thereof; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line III-III of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detached inverted inner fastener.
'Iies in accordance with this invention comprise flat metallic slabs 1, and each tie has the outer end thereof provided with outer rail fasteners 2. These fasteners are riveted or otherwise connected, as at 3, to thetie 1, and each outer fastener has an inwardly projecting overhanging flange 4 adapted to engage the outer base flange 5 of a rail 6. The outer fasteners are permanent and determine the gage of a track, said outer fasteners preventing the rails from spreading or becoming vertically displaced.
'Io retain the outer base flanges of the rail 6 in engagement with the outer fasteners of the tie, I employ inner fasteners 7 VThe inner fasteners are somewhat similar to the outer fasteners, each fastener having an overhanging flange 8 to engage an inner base flange 9 of the rail 6. Each inner fastener has a depending rectangular block 10 adapted to it in an elongated opening or slot 11 provided therefor in thetie 1. The lower part of the opening or slot 11 is enlarged or of a greater widththan the upper part of the slot to provide horizontal shoulders 12. Engaging these shoulders and snugly fitting in the lower part of the opening or slot l1 is a bolt head 13 and the walls of the opening or slot prevents said head from rotating. The bolt carried by the head 13 extends upwardly through a vertical opening 14 provided therefor in the block 10 and the inner fasteners 7, said bolt shank having the upper end thereof threaded, as at 15 to receive a nut 16. The slot or opening 11 is of a greater length than the block 10, consequently the inner fastener can be shifted inwardly to firmly grip the inner base flange 9 of a rail, should the same become loose.
It is thought that the manner of installing the ties and rail fasteners will be apparent without further description, and I reserve the right to make such changes in the structural details as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A metallic tie comprising a rectangular relatively thin slab for supporting a pair of rails, plates iXedly secured to the upper face of said slab at'each end thereof and leach provided with an inwardly extending portion capable of overlapping one side of the base of the rail for securing the same upon the slab, said slab further provided in proximity to eachvof said inwardly eX- tending portions with a centrally disposed longitudinally extending rectangular slot, the lower portion of said slot being of greater width than the upper portion thereby providing the Vside walls of the slot with shoulders, inner fasteners mounted upon said slab and each consisting of a plate provided with outwardly projecting flanges capable of overlapping the outer sides of the bases of the rails for maintaining them in position upon the slab, rectangular blocks integral with the lower face of said inner bolts upwardly through said slots, and
