This invention relates to a simple and.

efficient means for attaching racks to the 7 body of a wagon, and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient attaching device which is formed of sheet metal and which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and consists of a small number of parts.

Other objects and advantages of the present device will appear throughout the following specification and claim.

In the drawings Figure l is a transverse section taken through the wagon body showing the rack in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of a difierent form of rack applied to the wagon body. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the socket used in connection with the present invention. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the fingers adapted to be carried by the rack for engaging the socket illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the finger illustrated in Fig. 4 is formed. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the socket shown in Fig. 3 is formed. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective of the plate which is adapted to be engaged by the lower threaded ends of the socket illustrated in Fig. 3.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the wagon which is provided with the usual side rails 2. These side rails 2 are supported upon the 4 transversely extending beams 3, which beams support the usual flooring 4. A plurality of socket members 5 such as indicated in Fig. 2 are carried by the side rails 2 and constitute a substantially U-shaped bolt portion 6 having lower threaded ends 7 upon which the nuts 8 are threaded for holding the bolt portions in engagement with the rails 2.

A circular band 9 is carried by one of the side members of the U-shaped bolt portion 6 and constitutes a socket for receiving the finger 10. The circular band comprises a pair of substantially semi-circular sections 18, which sections have their respective ends abutting as illustrated in Fig. 3 for producing an efficient socket.

The finger 10 comprises a tubular body portion which carries at its upper end a plurality of upwardly extending ears 11 and a plurality of laterally extending ears 12. These upwardly extending ears 11 straddle the vertical portion of the rack 13 and the lower longitudinally extending slat let of the rack as illustrated in Fig. 1. The laterally extending ears 12 extend longitudinally of the lower surface of the bottom slat 1 1. The ears 11 are secured to the sides of the rack by any suitable fastening means such as rivets or pins. The laterally extending ears 12 are also secured to the under face of the transverse beam 19 when used as a hay rack by means of pins such as illuspurpose of receiving a cotter pin 17, which cotter pin is adapted to fit under the circular band 9 of the socket member 5 and hold the finger 10 in firm engagement with this socket member 5.

In Fig. v7 there is shown a perspective view of the plate 22 through which are adapted to pass the threaded lower ends 7 of the bolt portion 6 of the socket member 5. This plate will constitute an efiicient bearing means for the nuts which are adapted to be threaded upon the lower threaded portions 7 of the bolt portion 6.

It, of course, should be understood that the present device, to wit: the sockets and fingers may be applied to any form of rack for the purpose of facilitating the quick and easy attaching of the rack upon the body of a wagon.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is

A securing device for connecting a rack to the body of a vehicle comprising a socket member provided with a plurality of depending bolt portions, nuts threaded upon the lower ends of said bolt portions for connecting said socket member to said body, said socket member provided with a pair of sub stantially semi-circular jaws abutting at their adjacent ends and being formed of sheet metal, a finger adapted to fit in said Copies bf this patent may be obtained for to said rack.
