RAILWAY-RAIL BRACE.
Application filed February This invention relates to improvements in railway rail braces, and the object thereof to provide an easily applied connection between the rails of a railway by which the 5 rails are maintained in fixed spaced relation with each other without forming an obstruction to the rolling stock moving upon the railway. It frequently occurs when braces of the ordinary construction are employed,

I The invention consists of a pair of brace members 1 and 2, the one being the counterpart of the other and positioned oppositely. The adjacent ends of said members are bent at right angles to form corresponding feet 3 which are connected together by a bolt 4 that" extends through said feet and through a sleeve 5 that is positioned between said feet so that the said brace members are held spaced apart a fixed distance. The bolt has a nut 6 on its extending end, which when tightened, causes the sleeve 5 to be clamped between the feet 3 of said members, and a cotter pin 7 extends through the projecting end of the bolt to prevent retraction of the nut.

8 shaped to receive the outer flange 9 of the corresponding rail 10, and a dog 11 is secured by a bolt 12 to each brace member at a point thereon spaced from its hooked end so that the jaw 13 of the dog will be clamped upon the inner flange 14 of the corresponding rail. Each bolt 12 is provided with a cotter-pin 15 to prevent the nut 16 thereon from retracting.
In utilizing the invention the brace members are placed in position opposite each other with their respective outer ends hooked onto the outer flanges of the corresponding rails, and the dogs 11 are secured in position on said members so that the inner flanges of the corresponding rails are clamped thereby upon said members. The sleeve 5 is then positioned between the feet of said members, and the connecting bolt 4 is applied through said feet and sleeve. The nut 6 is then tightened so that the feet of said members are drawn firmly against the corresponding ends of the sleeve. When the invention is thus applied the rails are held a fixed distance apart, and the gauge of the railway track is thereby established and maintained.
' What I claim is 1. A railway rail brace consisting of a pair of oppositely disposed brace members, each comprising a fiat bar twisted in its middle portion so that one of its end portions extends edgewise in a vertical plane while its opposite end extends edgewise horizontally, one end of each member having a hook en- 7 gageable with the outer flange of one of the 35 rails of a railway track, its opposite end having a foot formed thereon; a spacing member positioned between the feet of said brace members; a bolt extending through said feet and brace members to establish and maintain said members a fixed distance apart; and a dogon each brace member inclamped engagement with the inner flange of the corresponding rail.
2. A railway rail brace consisting of a 9 pair of oppositely disposed brace members,
the outer end of each member extending beneath the corresponding rail of said railway and having a hook engageabie With the outer flange thereof, the opposite end of said brace member having a foot formed thereon; a spacing member positioned between said members with its ends bearing correspondingly against the feet thereof; a bolt extending through said feet and securing said spacing member in clamped relation with said feet; and a clamping means on each brace member engaging the inner flange of the 10 corresponding rail.
