OSCAR BLAKELEY, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
Application filed April 30, 1907. Serial No. 371,193.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR BLAKELEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, lof which the following 1s a speclfication.
My invention has for its primary object the provision of a tool of the type indicated which while being comparatively simple in construction, embraces certain features which render it particularly useful in the separating of parts nailed together, as for eX- ample, the removing of the tops of boxes.
With the above and other objects in view, to be referred to as the description progresses, the invention resides in the features of construction hereinafter described and succinctly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the invention, a portion of the handle or hand part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section 4taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a suitable handle or hand part 1 from one side of which projects an elongated member, 2 disposed longitudinally of said handle or hand part and provided in its forward and rear end portions with nail receiving openings or clefts 3. Member 2 has wedge shaped end portions, either one of which can be readily inserted between the parts to be separated, and by swinging the handle or hand part 1 so as to elevate one end portion of member 2 while the other end portion of said memberserves as a fulcrum, or by alternately elevating the opposite end portions of said member, vone part nailed to another, as for example the cover of a box, can be readily removed. The central portion of -member 2 is increased in thickness inwardly,
as at 4, the upper face of said member being inclined as clearly 'shown in Fig. 3, whereby the insertion of member 2 between the cover and underlying edge of a side wall of the box, is facilitated.
In the present embodiment of my invention, member 2 is formed integral with a head Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 22, 1908.
5 in which the handle or hand part 1 is removably secured, and said head is provided with an extended impact part 6 for driving nails or the like, to one side of member 2, and at the opposite side of this member, head 5 is provided with an outwardly and rearwardly curved extension 7 whose outer portion is of considerable width and reduced in thickness to provide a fine edge for cutting and scraping.
In view of the foregoing, it will be observed that my improved tool can be readily employed for prying covers from boxes after which the nails can be removed, then any painted or printed matter on said cover can be effaced through the medium of the cutting and scraping edge of the extension 7.
While I have herein described and illustrated a construction which will carry out the functions assigned thereto, I reserve the right to make such changes and alterations in said construction as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A box opening tool comprising a member formed with claw-end portions, a lever secured to one side thereof and extending longitudinally thereof and beyond one end of vthe same, a guide portion projecting below the said member intermediate its ends, and each claw-end portion being adapted to serve as a fulcrum for the other claw-end.
2. In a compound tool, the combination with a drivingehead provided with a rightangular handle, of a laterally extending member disposed at right-angles to said driving-head vand extending rearwardly therebeyond and longitudinally with the handle, said member being provided with cleft ends, the upper face of the portion of the member intermediate the ends thereof being gradually inclined upwardly toward the center thereof and toward the inner side, and the under face of said member being flat, said driving head projecting below said member.
Signed at Seattle, Washington this 23rd day of April 1907.
OSCAR BLAKELEY.'
