Description

No. 897,871. PATENTED SEPT. 8,190 8.
s. 3. BROWN.
FASTENING DEVICE EOE OUTSIDE WINDOWS.
APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 1, 1908.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON S. BROWN, OF WATERVILLE, MAINE.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR OUTSIDE WINDOWS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterville, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Outside Windows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to additional or outside windows for protection against cold weather and storms and to means for holding the same close to the casing of the ordinary window-frame; and it has more especial' relation to devices of thiskind which do not require the use of a ladder but permit the outside window to be set in place from within the room after opening the ordinary wmdow.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts herelnafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of an outside window in place; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view of the bolt and the bracket which it engages.
A designates an ordinary window; B designates the outer window provided below th e center with small handles to facilitate raising and placing it; and at a lower point with holes I) from front to rear.
C designates a pair of brackets attached to the fixed window casing at points approximately corresponding to the holes b. Each of these has a pair of upwardly presented bifurcations m and n having a narrow space or slot 0 between them. The bifurcation m is shorter than the other, n,
"and is presented inwardly in a plane parallel to that of the window-panes, thus bringing said space 0 behind the hole I) in each instance. A bolt D passes through each hole I) being provided with a bent end I) which comes in contact with the exterior of the Specification of Letters Patent.

said outside window, also with a nut p for its other end, which in use binds against the inner face of the proximate bracket C.
The operator, having raised the lower sash of the ordinary window A, passes the outside Window B out through the opening thus made, brings it into vertical position with the two bolts D over the open ends of the slots 19, lowers said outside window B slightly, bringing the bolts to the bottoms ofsaid slots; then tightening the nuts 1) so that they will bear against the rear or inner faces of the bifurcations m, m and thus draw the outside window tightly against the window-casing, efiectually covering the inside or ordinary window. Whenever said outside window Works loose or is loosened-by changes of temperature these nuts may be tightened to compensate therefor. Of course, when the outside window is to be taken in on the approach of warm weather, or for cleaning or repair, these nuts are loosened and the above described rocedure reversed. There is no need in either case for a ladder or other means of access to the front of the building, since the removal of the outside window, as well as setting it in place, may easily be effected by reaching through the inner opening from within the room. Every part used is rigid, and will not weaken with time as would happen to resilient or flexible window-holding devices. The cooperating bolts and brackets are simple, strong and easily manufactured; and no other parts are used beside the two windows, the finger holds and the window-casing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-' loo 5 devices behind the slots substantially as set with ajgair of holes I in combination with a name to this specification in the presence of psi; Elf; doltls extiending through said Window two subscribing witnesses. an e s otte devices receiving said bolts the nuts of thelatterbearing against said SIMON BROWN Witnesses:
