To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beggs, in the county of Okmulgee and State of .Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weather-Strips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in weather strips and has relation more particularly to stripping of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with clap boards or the like; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved stripping whereby ingress within a building at the ends of the boards at a window or door opening is effectively prevented.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved strip whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac companying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating weather strips constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective of an end portion of one of my improved weather strips as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, W denotes a wall having formed therein the opening 0 which may be of any dimensions desired and for any particular purpose. The wall W as herein embodied consists of the clap boards 1.
S denotes a weather strip coacting with each of the vertical edges of the opening 0 and which is formed preferably of tin, although any other metal may be employed.
The strip S is U-shaped in cross section so that the same may straddle the vertical edges of the opening 0, whereby it will be perceived that ingress of the elements at the ends of the boards 1 at the opening 0 is effectively prevented.
The opposite ends of the strip S are crimped, as at 2, to afford shoulders 3 adapted to bear against the upper and lower edges of the opening 0 and so that the end portions of the strip will be exterior of the wall W. It has been fully demonstrated in practice that by crimping the strip S as just recited, much more advantageous results are attained as it has been undeniably proven that should the strip be out there is always a possibility of the elements passing through said cut portion.
It is preferred that one, preferably the inner, side of the strip S be of greater length than the outer side thereof so that said in nor side may be disposed between the boards 1 and the studdings 4 arranged at the vertical edges of the opening 0 so that the securing members 5, such as nails of a conventional type, for holding the boards 1 to said studdings 4 also pass through the inner side of the strip S to assure the same being positively maintained in applied position. It is also preferred that the outer side of the strip S be of such a width that when a conventional window or door casing is applied to the opening, said outer side of the strip S will be concealed.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a strip constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
