WILLIAM ABRAHAM, OF MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEJ-IALF TO HENRY F. BARTLING, OF MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA.
WIND OW-PANE FASTENER.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.
Serial No. 598,098.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ABRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minot, in the county of Ward and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Window-Pane Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel construction of window sash embodying a locking strip for holding window-panes of varying thickness in the sash, the employment of putty in securing the pane in place being obviated.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a portion of a window sash constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, the locking strip being illustrated in condition prior to being bent to secure the pane in place in the sash; Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2, illustrating the strip bent into locking engagement with the pane; and Fig. 4 is a view also similar to Fig. 2 illustrating the manner in which the strip is bent to hold a comparatively thin pane of glass in the sash.
In the drawings, there is shown only a portion of a window-sash embodying the present invention and of this portion, the stile of the sash is indicated by the numeral 5, while the window-pane is indicated by the numeral 7. The stile 5 of the said frame is formed with a right angular rabbet, the upright wall of which is indicated by the numeral 8 and the lateral wall by the numeral 9, and next outside the said rabbet is a supplemental right angular rabbet, the lateral wall of which is designated at 10. The stile is also provided with a groove 11 whose inner wall is in a plane with the inner wall of the supplemental rabbet and the pane 7 rests in the former rabbet and fits into the outer wall thereof. A pliable metallic strip 12, preferably lead, has one end seated in the said groove, its body extending inwardly across the supplemental rabbet and its outer edge contacting with the outer face of the pane. As shown in Fig. 4c, the pane is comparatively thin and the outer edge of the locking strip 12 must necessarily be deflected against the same.
With this construction, therefore, it will be seen that the outer edge of the strip 12 can be bent into the space provided by the supplemental rabbet to permit the pane to be removed and inserted, the strip being shown in such position in the dotted line in Fig. 2, and the said strip subsequently being bent inward to secure the pane in position. It will also be noted that the strip can be removed whenever desired without the displacement of the pane.
What is claimed is In a window pane fastener the combination with a sash frame having a right angular rabbet, a supplemental right angular rabbet next outside said rabbet and a groove whose inner wall is in a plane with the inner wall of the supplemental rabbet; of a pane resting in the former rabbet and fitting into the outer wall thereof, and a pliable metallic strip having one end seated in the said groove, its body extending inwardly across said supplemental rabbet and its outer edge contacting with the outer face of the pane.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM ABRAHAM.
