Description

UNITE-D .STATES PATEMICE- IMPROVED TRUNK-CLAMP.
Specification forming part of Letters-Patent No. 89,773, dated May 4, 1869.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. JEssUP,
.proved trunk-clamp; Fig. 2, a similar view,
with the-angle of the iron more obtuse than in Fig. l, to adapt it to the bilge of the top or sides of the trunk; and Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inpall the figures. j
My invention consists, as a new article of manufacture, of a trunk-clamp or corner-iron made of malleable cast metal, formed with a bead or corrugation transversely of the angle, for giving it greater strength and receiving the wear and contact. to which the trunk is subjected. v
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates the clamp or corner plate, which is made of malleable cast-iron, and provided with rivetholes a af, by which it is secured to the body of the trunk, and of the proper angle to correspond with the part to which itis applied. A
lbead or corrugation, b, is formed on the iron A, which extends around the corner, as shown,
and projects out a sufficient degree beyond the body of the trunk to -receive the wear and concussion of its contact with other bodies. The bead also serves most e'ectually to give strength and rigidity to the clamp against any undue strain. By this device the trunk is not only made much stron ger, and the joints .more rigid than by the ordinary methods, but by means of the rib` b projecting out a little beyond the body it receives the wear and concussion to which the trunk is subjected, and shields the same to a great degree. The projection of the bead also serves to prevent the trunk from being injured by friction against other trunks, or the sides of a baggage car or wagon, and thus insures to it preservation and durability.
What I claim as myinventiomand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cast malleable clamp having a proj ect* ing hollow bea-d, a, which extends across the face of the plates constituting the clamp in the direction of the angle thereof, as a new article of manufacture, for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed I my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. S. J ESSUP. Witnesses:
