CLASP FOR ovsnsHoEs.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application led Decemher, 1907. SeraLNo. 405,093.
Patented sept. i, laos.
T o all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH' L. MrLLiKEN, citizen of the United States, residing at `Stanford University, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and usefulv Im rovements in Clasps for Overshoes, of whic i the following is a specification. l j
The object'of this invention is a simple, durable and efficient construction of clasp which is designed to be vattached to articles, such` as coats and the like, when they are left in cloak-'rooms or are checked, and which forms a means of ready identification for such articles. And a further object of the invention is an im roved device of this character which may e conveniently ap lied to small articles as overshoes, hats ortie like, tofasten them together and which may be readily removed therefrom. j
With'this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention vconsists in certain constructions and arrange-ments of parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and clai'in.
For a full understanding of the invention and. the ineri-ts thereof, reference iste ,be
had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 1s a perspective-view of my improved claspshowing it applied., Fig. 2 is a View in elevation thereof.- Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view, and. Fig. 4 is a view verging spring jaws 3, which are crimped indicated at 4.
in elevation showing the rocked position 'of the jaws.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
vMy improved ,Clas
The extremities of the strip are thendoii'bled inwardly upon themselves to form the coninwardly at opposite intermediate points as The inner extremities of the` jaws 3 are normally in ,contact and are each serrated .to form .a teeth 5. A
A name, initials, or any suitable identify j is preferably con. structedof an integrastrip of spring inate-" serios of engaging ing inscription or design is stamped, etched,
painted or provided in any convenient inan-' ner ony the outer side of one or lootli of the arms l, as indicated at-. f
In the practical use of 'my improved clasp, it is slipped overa portion of the article or articlesto which itis to be applied as illus:- trated in Fig. 1, so that said portion is passed between the convergingspring jaws and is engaged bythe teeth 5 of the inner ends thereof to be 'held securely therebetween, said article being readily identified by the inscription 6.
,To remove the clasp from' position ,the I arms are inched together near the ends 2 thereof. uch movement causes the crimped portions 4 to bear against tliearticle and Aresults in the jaws turning about the .said
crimped ortions as fulcrums 'and in the rocking'o said teeth out of engagement with the article so that the clasp may be readily drawn out of iosition.
From the above description in connection with, the accompanying drawing, it will be seen-that have provided a clasp in which the engaging teeth may beheld in spaced position during the application or removal of the clasp to orV from an article, by' pinching together the ends-of the arms l and effecting a rocking moven'ient of the jaws upon their crimped portions, in order to prevent any tearing or other .like injury to said article.V l y Having thus described the invention, what Iiclaini isz.
The herein-described clasp consisting of a strip doubled upon itself to forni spaced spring arms, tlie ends of the strip being 4returned. inwardly with their extremities.
normallyin engagement with each other and forming inwardly facing jaws, said jaws being normally lspaced from each other except at such extremities and being crimped towards each other at corresponding points interniwliate of their ends, as and for the purpose set for-th. l.
ln testimony `whereof I ailix my signature in presence ef two witnesses.
