Be it known that I, ALBERT H. ZIMA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Gerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Fasteners, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in collar fasteners and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for securing the collars of draft animals together and my object is to provide a device of this class, which is made in two sections and secured to the meeting ends of the collar so that when said meeting ends are brought together the same may be quickly and securely self-locked in their adjusted positions.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims. v

In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application I have shown the preferred form of my invention.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a central sectional view through a portion of a collar and the sections of my improved fastening device thereon and showing the same in a locked position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one section of the fastener removed from the collar, and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the opposite section removed from the collar.

Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 indicates a collar which is preferably formed in a single section and having the meeting ends 2 and 3 thereof at the upper end of the collar so that when said collar is to be applied to use on the neck of the animal, the meeting ends may be separated sufficiently to pass to opposite sides of the neck of the animal and in order to quickly and reliably secure the meeting ends together, I provide my improved form of fastening device which is preferably made in two sections and consists of angle plates 4 and 5 which are secured respectively to the ends 2, and 3 of the collar, the horizontal portions 6 and 7 re spectively of said plates being secured to the ends of the collar by means of bolts 8 which are adapted to extend through openings 9 in the horizontal portions 6 and 7. 5 are adapted to abut against each other When the ends of the collar are brought together, plate 5 being provided with a plurality of tongues 12 which are formed by striking out portions of the body of the vertical extension 11 and extending the same outwardly.

I also provide recesses 13 on the section 4 which are adapted to receive the tongues 12 when the sections 4 and 5 are brought together. In order to positively lock the two angle plates together, I have provided a keeper 14 which is secured in any preferred manner to the horizontal portion of the plate 4 as by means of rivets 15. The keeper 14 is curved longitudinally and tapered at the outer end as clearly shown in Fig. 1 and is adapted to extend through the opening 16 in the vertical portion 11 formed by removing the middle tongue 12. The keeper 14 also passes through a suitable opening in the extension 10.

In order to securely lock the two sections 4 and 5 together, I have provided a latch 17 which is pivotally secured at one end of the vertical portion 11 of the section 5 and has on its lower edge a detent 18 which is adapted to extend through a slot 19 formed in the keeper 14. It will thus be seen that as long as said detent is in engagement with said slot, the two sections of my device will be securely held together. The swinging end of the latch 17 is provided with a thumb plate 20 which extends at right angles to the vertical portion of the latch so that said latch may be readily raised by' directing pressure on said thumb plate. It will thus be seenthat as the two portions of the device are brought together the tapering end of the keeper 14 will extend under the detent 18 and raise the latch 17. Latch 17 will drop into closed position as soon as the slot 19 comes under the detent 18 and the portions of the device will be securely held into position. It will also be seen that the tongues 12 and the keeper 14 will prevent individual vertical movement of the two sections of the device. It will also be seen that the collar may be quickly secured around or removed from the neck of the animal and that the two parts of the device will automatically look when the same are brought together.

WVhat I claim is:

The combination with a collar having meeting ends; of plates secured to said meeting ends, said plates having abutting vertical extensions, the lower portion of one of the plates having tongues struck therefrom, the lower portion of the vertical extension of the second plate having recesses formed therein for the reception of the tongues of the first-named plate, said extension of the second plate having an opening therein, a keeper secured at one end to the second plate passing through the opening in the extension thereof, said keeper being longitudinally curved and having a transverse slot adjacent its free end, said free end extending through an opening in the vertical extension of the first-named plate and a latch pivotally held by the extension of the first-named plate, said latch being provided with a detent to pass through the slot of the keeper, said detent being of such size with relation to the latch proper as to be free of contact with the plate.
