PATENTED AUG. 25, 1908. P. PAUSE.
GLASS SIGN.

GLASS SIGN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1908.
Application filed December 30, 1907. Serial No. 408,580.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL PAUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glass Signs, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to glass signs, the object being to provide an ornamental sign which can'be formed very cheaply, and will have the appearance of a leaded glass sign.
Another object of my invention is, to provide a sign which is translucent, so that it can be used as an illuminating sign when desired.
These objects are accomplished by cutting grooves into the rear face of the glass to form the outline of letters which are connected together by grooves, and the portions surrounding the letters thus formed, are also divided into compartments, by a plurality of com municating grooves, these grooves being silvered and the compartments thus formed,
give the appearance of leaded glass.
These objects are obtained by the novel arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1, is a front view of my improved sign, and, Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section of the same.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a wooden frame which is provided with an oval openmg m which is secured an oval plate of glass 2. 7 The rear face of the glass plate is grooved to form the outline of letters to form words, which are to be used for advertising, the out: lme of the letters are connected together by grooves, and the portions surrounding the letters are divided into compartments by communicating grooves. The grooves thus formed are silvered or coated with any substance to give the appearance of lead, and the compartments formed by the grooves are coated with contrasting pigments to give the appearance of different colored pieces of glass. It will be seen that, from the front the sign will have the appearance of leaded glass signs which are now in use. It of course being understood, that any suitable color or staining matter can be used for ac complishing this result, and that when the sign is placed in front of a strong light, it will make a very pretty effect so as to attract attention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A sign for advertising purposes comprising a wooden frame and a translucent glass sign arranged therein and adapted to be placed in front of an artificial light said translucent sign comprising a plate of glass having a plurality of intersecting grooves formed in one of its faces forming letters and irregular spaces, said grooves being silvered in imitation of leaded glass and said spaces being colored with translucent pigments, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
