To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IsAiE Fnnonnrrn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the .city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to combs; the object of my invention is to provide a comb with means for retaining itself in the hair of the wearer, without the use of pivoted parts, and by utilizing the resiliency of the comb itself; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:

Figure 1 is an elevation, showing the retaining means in closed or operative osition; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same orm of comb without the ornamental back, and showing the retaining means in open or inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 2 showing the hair retaining means in inoperative position; and, Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on line 44 of Fig. 2 showing the hair retaining means in operative position.

Referriin to the drawings, 1 designates an ornamental back of suitable construction, secured to the comb proper 2 in any way so as to leave a rojecting flange 3, which flange is maintained at a slight distance away from the body of the comb.

The flange 3 is provided with a slot 4, through which loosely passes a loop 5, carried by a lip 6 formed on a hair retaining member 7 The hair retaining member 7 may be made of celluloid, bone, or other similar common comb making materials having a slight resiliency, and is adapted to slide under the flange 3. .The loop 5 assing through the slot 4 prevents the disp acement of the hair retaining member, yet permits it, on slight ressure exerted at the ends thereof, to be s ipped from under the flange 3. The under face of the flange, adjacent each end,

is provided with recesses 8, into which are adapted to fit the lugs 9 formed on the outer surface of the hair retaining member 7, so that the member 7 is retained in osition When once it is inserted beneath the ange 3. Referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 4, the comb 2 is provided with a turned flange body 10, which corres onds to the ornamental portion 1 of the ot er form, and the free edge 11 of which extends parallel to the comb 2, similar to the flange 3 of Fig. 1. The flange 10 is provided with a slot 12, through which is passed a loop 13, formed integral with a hair retaining member 14, which hair retaining member is formed of a resilient material. Carried by the member 14, adjacent its ends, are In s 15, adapted to fit into recesses 16 forme on the under side of the flange 10 and to firmly retain. the member 14 in position when once it is slipped beneath the flange 10. The ends of the hair retaining members 7 and 14 are rovided with wings 17, by means of which t e retaining members 7 and 14 may be easily removed and inserted under the flanges 3 and 10 respectively.

In the operation of the invention the hair I retaining members are slipped from beneath their respective flanges and the combs inserted into the hair. The retaining members are then inserted under their flanges, tightly gripping a portion of the hair against the underside of the flanges, by means of wlhich gripping action the combs are held in ace. P Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In combination with a comb body having a flange provided with an elongated slot, a hair retaining member adapted to be removably wedged between the comb body and its flange, a loop fixed to said hair retaining member adapted to travel freely in said slot and to constitute a movable pivotal connection between said flange and said hair retaining member, and means for retainin said halr retaining member beneath saic l flange, said means comprising cooperating lugs and recesses on the retaining member and the flange of the comb respectively.
