Be it known that I, WALKER L. PERKIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Door-Check, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of de vices used for checkingand holding open doors; and has for its object to provide a horizontally rotatable device to be fastened to the floor or overhead in the path of a moving door near its edge where it will be struck by the door and caused to turn and automatically engage the door on each side and retain it in open position until disengaged.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device that is ready at all times-to engage the door when pushed against by it that does not require to beset, is simple cheap and noiseless, made of few arts, and does not deface thedoor nor mar t e appearance of a room by its presence therein.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction,
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the attached claims.

The numeral 1 indicates a flat plate, or a ends is secured a knob or buffer 3. A hole is bored through the center of the plate, see Fig. 5, for a pivot screw 5 by means of which the device is attached to the floor in the path of a moving door. A washer 6 is placed between the plate 1 and the floor to form a hearing surface for the plate and to reduce friction.

A more simple construction is shown in Fig. 6. Here a washer 11 is fitted in the opening 4 in the late 1 and rests on the large washer 6. e screw 5 and washer 9 hold the parts together as shown in the preferred form, the plate 1 rotating about the washer 11 as a pivot.

Each of the knobs or buffers 3 has a cylindrical neck 12 topped with an enlarged head 13 having a hemispherical edge 14,. in the periphery of which is made a semi-circular orizontal groove 15 for a rubber. ring 16 projecting beyond the side of thehe'ad and forms an abutting surface for the door. Through the neck and head of each knob 3 is a cylindrical bore 17 containing a rigid sleeve 18 around which the knob easily turns.
' Extending upwardly through a hole 19 in an end 2 of the plate 1 and through the sleeve 18 above its upper end is ascrew bolt 20, held in place by a nut21 threaded on the end of the screw and bearing on the upper end of the sleeve 18, holding it tightly against the plate 1. This construction forms a strong pivot for the knob, enabling it to receive severe blows from a door without bending it. The bore 17 in the knob is counter bored at the top at 22 to permit the use of a nut large enough to extend over the A washer may be placed between the nut and the sleeve if desired.
A door check such as described is, when'in use, fastened to the floor near the wall in po sition to have one of its knobs struck by the side of a door near its edge when the door is opened to its full extent. When a knob is struck by the door the plate 1 turns to the right or left, depending upon which side of the center of the shortest line drawn from the axis of the plate to the door, the knob may be. If the knob struck turns towards the edge of the door, the other knob will be carried towards the door and on being struck,
it willbe returned by the continued movement of the door, rotating the plate until the other knob is carried to the other side of the door, thus catching the latter between the two knobs. If the knob struck turns toward the hinged edgeof the door, the other knob will be carried around to the front and the door will again be can ht between the knobs. To prevent the shoe and ar, and perhaps injury to the door check shouldit be struckby the door when the plate 1 is perpendicular thereto, a small triangular or semi-circular block 23 is fastened to the door a little to one side of the point Where the door would strike the knob 3 as shown in Fig. 7. This will insure the operation of the door check at all times.

3. A door check comprising a pivoted elongated plate with slightly raised ends, a vertical'pivot on each of said raised ends, a knob rotatable on each-pivot, and a cushion surrounding each knob and projecting over the respective ends of the plate.
4. A door check comprising an intermeeach of said bolts, a bufier or knob rotatable on each sleeve and a nut on each bolt adapted to rigidly clamp the sleeve to said plate and prevent the removal of the knob from the sleeve.
5. A door check comprising a thin plate centrally pivoted, a vertical pivot at each end of said plate, and a knob on each pivot having a cylindrical neck and'an enlarged head on the upper end ofsaid neck provided with a projectin' peripheral cushion.
