' 'A froze/my;
UNITED JOHN B. BORING, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
WEIGHT OR FOLLOWER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Application filed December 23, 1905. Serial No. 293,139.
To all whom it may concern.'
f Beit known that I, JOHN B. BORING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Weight or Follower, of which a s eciiication.
his invention relates to Weights or followers and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character adapted to hold sauer-kraut, pickles, corn beef and the like submerged under pressure in water, brine or other preserving liquid.
A further object of the invention is to rovide a weight or follower constructed ofp cement or other plastic material and formed with a curved or bowed handle an intermediate portion of which is spaced from the base of the Jfollower to ermit the latter to be readily removed an supported on the edge of a barrel or other containing rece tacle.
A still further object is to form t e opposite ends of the handle with laterallyextend- 2 5 ing anchoring iianges adapted to be embedded in the body or base of the follower while the latter is in a lastic state so that when the cement solidiflhs the handle will be securely retained in position.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification z-Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved weight or follower showing the same in position in a containing receptacle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the follower removed from the receptacle. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the handle detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved weight or follower consists of an imfperforate base or body portion 5 formed o cement, concrete, terra cotta or the following is other suitable plastic material molded into circular form, as shown, and having its peripheral edge inclined or beveled at 6 to facilitate the insertion of the follower within the barrel or other receptacle 7. The upper and lower surfaces of the body portion are disposed parallel to each other and embedded in the upper surface 8 is a handle 9 an intermediate portion of which is curved or bowed, as shown, and spaced from the surface 8 to permit the handle to be readily grasped in manipulating the follower. A
The opposite ends of the handle 9 are molded or otherwise formed into bell-shaped or trumpet-mouth shaped anchoring members 10 adapted to be embedded in the body portion while the latter is in a plastic state so that when the cement hardens the handle and body portion will form an integral homogGDBOllS IIlaJSS.
In constructing the follower, the handle is first formed in a suitable mold and allowed to harden. into the desired shape and while the cement is still soft the flanged ends of the handle areforced into the cement and the upper face of the body portion troweled to present a smooth unobstructed surface for contact with the fingers when grasping the handle.
In use the follower is positioned upon the kraut or other material within the barrel, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 so as to exert a downward pressure on the kraut and keep the latter submerged in the brine. When it is desired to remove a portion of the kraut the follower may be conveniently supported on The body portion is then molded the rim of the barrel, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
By having the base formed solid and imperforate the brine or other liquid within the receptacle is prevented from flowing upward through the follower and wetting or otherwise soiling the hands of the operator while by reason of the terminal anchoring flanges the handle is securely retained in position.
The weights may be made in different sizes and formed of glass or if desired of terra cotta in which event they may be baked in a suitable kiln before using.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is
As a new article of manufacture, a follower for vessels comprising a truncated coneshaped solid body and a handle formedwholly of cement, the terminals of the handle being my own, I have hereto aHiXed my signature bell-shaped andbdioed in linement snd in the presence of two Witnesses.
