To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL W. MAR- TIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willard, in the county of Putnam, State of ful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has reference to im-. provements in wrenches, and it aims to provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, and effective, device of that nature of the sliding jaw type.
To this end the invention consists in the provision of a wrench comprising in its entirety, a longitudinally bored shank provided at its'upper end with a jaw, and having an opening formed in one of its side faces communicating with the bore, a shank slidably engaged with the bore, of the first-mentioned shan and provided at its upper end with a jaw, a spring pressed plug fitted in said opening and having a tooth formed on its inner end which tooth is adapted to engage with the toothed face of the sliding shank.
The invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, and its preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accom anying drawings, in which like parts are designated by corresponding reference characters, throughout t e several views.
Of the said drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, the sliding jaw being shown as partly extended. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the wrench, Fig. 4 is from the main shank, Fig. 5 is 'a detailed perspective view of the plug and the spring actuating the same Fig. 6 is a plan view of the wrench.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 7 indicates generally the outer shank of the wrench upon the upper end of which the jaw 8 is formed. This shank is provided with a longitudinal bore 9 which extends from end to end thereof, and with an opening 10 which is formed in one of its side faces and communicates with the bore 9.
Slidable within the bore of the first-mentioned shank is a second shank 11 which projects normally above the upper end of the atter and is provided at such point with a jaw 12 formed integrally therewith, said jaw having one end bifurcated as indicated by the numeral 13, to form nail extracting claws, while its opposite end 14 is rounded to form a hammer head. The side face of the shank 11 opposite the opening 10 is provided with a series of teeth 15 with which a single tooth 16 formed on the inner end of the plug 17, fitted in said opening, is adapted to engage, to hold the sliding shank in adjusted position. The plug 17 is normally forced inwardly through the opening 10 by a vertically-disposed leaf spring 18 which is secured thereto towards its upper end and at its lower end to the shank 7, the upper extremity of said spring being curved outwardly, as shown, to form a finger-piece 19. The lower end of the shank 11 is reduced to form a screw driver as indicated by the numeral 20.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that when the toothed plug 17 is vmoved out of engagement with the toothed face of the shank 11, the latter may be withdrawn from the bore 9, to dispose the jaw 12 the required distance from the jaw 8, the shank being retained in such position by means of said plug which reengages therewith upon regaining its normal position.
What is claimed, is, The combination, in a wrench, of a shank having a j aw formed integral therewith at one end, said shank being provided with a longitudinal bore extending completely through said jaw, and with an opening formed in one of its side walls and communicating with the bore; a shank slidable within the bore and provided with a series of teeth formed upon the face opposite said opening; a jaw formed upon the upper end of the sliding shank and movable therewith towards and from the firstmentioned j aw a toothed plug slidably fitted in said opening; and a leaf spring located exteriorly of the first mentioned shank and secured at one end thereto and at the other end to the outer face of said plug for normally forcing the v latter through said opening into engagement with the toothed face of the shank being com letely removable from said sliding shank, to retain the latter in adjusted In testimony whereof, I am); my signature, position Within said bore,- the extremity of in presence of two Witnesses.
