Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
Application filed March 11, 1907. $e1'ial No. 361,788.
T 0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, PEARL W. OSBORN, a citizeness of the United States, residing at Loveland, in the county of Larilner and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character having means by which the movable jaw thereof may be quickly adjusted upon the object with which the wrench is to be engaged.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is partly a side view and partly a longitudinal sectional view of the wrench constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a rear edge view of the wrench; and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the wrench which consists of a shank 2 to one end of which is secured a handle 3 and on the opposite end of which is formed a fixed outer jaw member 4. On the rear side of the shank 2 is arranged a ratchet bar or plate 5. The bar or plate may be secured to the shank 2 in any suitable manner, but is here shown and is preferably secured to the shank by providing therein and in the handle 3 dove-tail notches or recesses 6 into which is fitted the dove-tail or beveled ends of the plate 5, as shown, said dove-tail connection serving as the sole means for holding the ratchet plate in place, whereby the latter may be readily removed for renewal when circumstances require.
Slidably mounted on the shank 2 is a movable jaw 7 the outer end of which is adapted to coact with the jaw 4 when engaged with the object to be turned. The jaw 7 is provided with parallel laterally-projecting side plates 8 which engage the opposite sides of the shank 2 and project beyond the rear edge of the same, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing.
Between the rearwardly-projecting side plates 8 is secured a guide-block 9, said block being preferably held in place by pins or rivets 10 which pass through the guide plates 8 and through said block, as shown and being terminated at its rear end short of the rear ends of the side plates.
Pivotally mounted between the lower ends of the rearwardly-projecting portions of the side plates are locking pawls 12 and 13, the inner ends of which are adapted to be engaged with the ratchet bar 5 to hold the movable jaw 7 in its adjusted positions on the shank 2. The pawls 12 and 13 are provided on their outer ends with operating lugs or handles 14 which project upwardly on the outer side of the block 9, as shown. Arranged between the projecting portions of the plates 8 is a flat spring 15, the forward end of which is adapted to be engaged with a notch or recess 16 on the inner side of the block 9, while the rear end of the spring is engaged with a notch 17 in the pawls 12 and 13 to hold the same in engagement with the teeth on the ratchet bar 5.
The ratchet engaging end of the pawl 13 is of greater length than the end of the pawl 12 so that said ends will alternately engage each successive tooth of the ratchet bar 5, thereby providing for a finer or closer adjustment of the movable jaw 7 and serving the purpose of a double number of ratchet teeth in the bar 5.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readilyunderstood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is,-'
A wrench comprising a shank carrying at its forward end :1 fixed jaw and having at its rear end a handle, a toothed ratchet plate provided on the shank, a movable jaw slidably arranged on the shank and having rearwardly extending side plates, a guide block fixed between said plates and provided with a recess, said block being terminated at its rear end short of the ends of the side plates, a pair of pawls pivoted between the side plates at the rear end of the guide block and having notches, and a spring having its forward end seated in said recesses and its rear end engaging with the notches in both of the pawls for moving the latter to ratchet engaging position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PEARL \V. OSBORN.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent N 0. 862,750, granted August, 6, 1907, upon the application of Pearl W. Osborn in Wrenches, tion. :is follows In line 14 of the grant the pronoun her should read his, and in line 2, page I, printed specification, the Word citizeness should read citz'zen; and that the proper corrections have been made in the files and records of the Patent Office, :1 ml are hereby made in said Letters Patent.
