To all whom it may concern Be it known that Malerin Goni-mino, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Yolyn, in the count-y of Logan and State o-f West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lWrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention relates to new and useful improvements lin wrenches and more particularly to a-quick adjustable wrench, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be quickly and readily adjusted to the desired position without removing the wrench from position on the object to be turned.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a wrench having a handle of sigmoidal design whereby to permit the head of the wrench to be introduced in places in positions that will not admit of wrenches of the ordinary type to be introduced.
A still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which will be very efiicient and durable in operation.
lll/lith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
ln the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, Figure l is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is aside elevation thereof, with parts in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the device, with parts removed. Fig. i is a transverse section through the head of the wrench showing the ratchet and pawl connection and the spring arrangement between the movable jaw and the housinw. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the device with parts broken away. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the movable jaw showing` the ratchet teeth on the shank thereof. Fig. 7 is a vertical section through the movable jaw. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the movable jaw with the shank thereon, and Fig. 9 is a vertical longitudinal section through the head of the wrench.

characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in whichl indicates a shank of sigmoidal design, the one end thereof having a housing i2 formed thereon and a stationary jaw E is formed at the one end of said housing to project substantially at right angles to the general turn of the housing. rlhe housing has a channel-way extending completely therethrough which also extends below the stationary jaw, and the one wall ol this channel-way, that is, the inner face of one wall of the housing, is provided with a longitudinal rib fl. lhe channel-way formed in the housing is dispised in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the contacting face of the stationary aw 8 and sildably mounted in said channel-way is a shank 5 which has a jaw 6 formed on the outer end thereof, said jaw being termed a movable jaw. The one side of this shank is provided with a groove 7 to receive therein the longitudinal rib il on the one wall of the housing, and the jaw G at the outer end of the shank is disposed in a plane at substantiallyv right angles to the plane of the shank to co-act with the stationary j aw 3.
Formed on the outer face of the wall of the housing opposite that having the rib L thereon, are a pair of ears 8 between which is pivoted a dog or the like 9, said dog having its effective end engaged in the ears thereof projecting through an opening 10 in the adjacent wall of the housing. One side of this shank 5 is provided for a portion of its length with teeth 11 with which the effect-ive end of said dog is adapted to be engaged and the outer end of said dog is designed to form a finger piece, as shown at 1Q. EL spring engaged with the end face of said finger piece and with the shank l acts on said dog so as to dispose the same normally to its effective position in engagement with the teeth of the shank 5, thereby retaining the movable jaw 6 in its adjusted position and in order to move said shank 5 to correspond with the jaw G thereof, it is necessary to release the engagement of the dog with the teeth ll by forcing downwardly on the linger piece against the tension of the spring 13.
The shank 5 from its inner end is provided with a channel 14 which is substantially of circular design in cross section and extends for a greater portion of the length of said shank, and the side of said shank having the teeth 11 therein is slotted longitudinally, as shown at 15, to communicate With said channel. JPri-ranged in said channel 14 is a coil spring 16, and a pin or projection 17 carried on the one Wall of the housing and extending inwardly, is received through the slot 15 and channel 14 of the shank 5. The proj ection 17 engaging the coil spring 16 in the channel 1l compresses said coil spring and when said shank and jaw 5 and 6, respectively, are retained in any adjusted position, the saine are held in such position against the tension of said coil spring 1G. As long, therefore, as the dog is released from its engagement with the teeth 11 of the shank, it Will be seen that said shank and javv 5 and 6 respectively, Will be forced outwardly under tension of said spring 16. rlhrough this mediuin all adjustments of the Wrench Will be quickly and readily made,
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the operation thereof will be readily understood and it Will be seen that l have provided a quick acting Wrench Which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which is very efficient and useful in operation.
lllhile l have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, Within the scope of the appended claim, Without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim, is:
A Wrench of the class described including a shank, a housing formed on one end thereof having a longitudinal channel extending completely therethrough, a stationary jaw formed on one end of said housing and having its engaging face arranged in a plane at right angles to the plane of the upper edge of said housing, one Wall of said housing having an opening therein, a longitudinal rib on the inner face of said Wall, an additional shank arranged for sliding movement in said housing and having a longitudinal groove to receive the aforesaid longitudinal rib, an additional jaw formed on one end of the additional shank and having its engaging face arranged in a plane at right angles to the upper face of said last mentioned shank, said last mentioned jaw forming a movable jaw for cooperation With the stationary jaw, said additional shank having a longitudinal channel therein terminating in a slot in one side of said shank, a coil spring arranged in the channel, an inwardly eX- tending projection on the Wall of said housing disposed through the slot and channel and adapted for engagement with one end of said coil spring, to compress the latter when the movable jaw is forced inwardly toward the stationary aw, a series of teeth formed on one side of the movable shank and a spring pressed pivoted dog carried on the housing and having its effective end disposed through the opening in the iirst nientioned shank to engage said teeth and retain the movable shank and jaw in any desirable position.
