Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BALDWIN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Broad Ford, county of Fayette, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to envelops, and the object of the invention is to provide an envelop that cannot be opened without detection, thereby preventing money and valuable documents from being surreptitiously removed from an envelop.
A still further object of this invention is to .provide a simple and inexpensive envelop that will fully protect matter'placed therein for transmission through the mails.
The invention will be presently described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan of a sealed envelop, Fig. 2 is a plan of a piece of material from which the envelop is made, Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the top and bottom flaps thereof closed, Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the gate flap thereof bent open, Fig. 5 is a plan of an envelopwith the back thereof closed, Fig 6 is a similar view with the end flaps sealed, and Fig. 7 is a similar view with the gate flap sealed.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the body of the envelop, which is constructed of paper, paperoid or similar dura- The body 1 is provided with a top flap 2, a-bottom flap 3, a back 4 having a tongue 5, and end flaps 6 and 7, the flap 7 carrying a gate or auxiliary flap 8.
The manner of constructing the envelop from the piece of paper as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings is as follows: The bottom flap 3 is folded upwardly upon the body of the envelop and then the top flap 2 is folded downwardly upon the bottom flap 3.
The gate or auxiliary flap 8 is then bent rearwardly and the back 4 folded upon the top flap 2, and the bottom flap 3 as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The end flaps 6 and 7 which have been previously gummed as at 9 are now moistened and folded over upon the back 4 and sealed to said back (see Fig. 6). The gate or auxiliary flap 8 which has also been gummed is now fastened and sealed upon the back 4. The tongue 5 carrying adhesive material is now bent and adhesively secured to the body or front side of the envelop (see Fig. 1).
It will be observed from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings that I have devised a novel closure for an envelop, and owing to the manner in which the various flaps are adhesively secured, it will be impossible for the envelop to be opened without detection.
The gate or auxiliary flap 8 which lies intermediate the end flaps 6 and 7 is provided for by simply shearing what would otherwise be a single end flap, and this gate flap together with the end flaps 6 and 7 are adapted to firmly hold the back 4 uponthe flaps 2 and 3. It is essential to provide this gate flap in order to close the opening through which the tongue 5 passes.
Various modifications of the invention can be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
An envelop comprising a body portion, top and bottom flaps adapted to fold thereon, a back flap of the same width and length of the body portion, said back flap adapted to fold upon said top and bottom flaps and provided at one end with a tongue carrying an adhesive substance, an end flap projecting from the body portion and carrying an adhesive substance, said end flap slitted to provide a gate flap, said end flap adapted to be folded upon and secured to the back flap, said flap providing means whereby the end flap can clear said tongue when folded upon the back flap and said tongue adapted to be folded on and secured to the body portion and said gate flap adapted to be secured to the back flap.
