A. ZIER. COLLAR FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 3, 1007.
Ilia WWW."
ANTHONY ZIER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COLLAR-FASTENER.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed July 3, 1907. Serial No. 382,029.
To (2Z5 whom. it may concern: known that I, ANTHONY ZIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Collar-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for attaching a collar to the neck-band of a shirt, and i objects are to make the device readily atable to the collar and the neck-band to rmit of a sliding or self-adjustin connec- 4 m between the fastener and the neck- 'oly thin; to .rovide means for holding the necktie in p ace; and 111 general to improve this class of'devices with a view to convenience and security in use and cheapness.
of manufacture.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention, all of the views being considerably enlarged.
Figure 1 is a rear side elevation of one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear side view of the fastener attached to a collar. Fig. 4 is a front or inner side view of the fastener attached to the collar. Fig. 5 is an inner side view of the fastener in place upon the neckband. Figs. 6 and 7 are side and edge views, respectively, of a modified form of the fastener.
The fastenermay be made of wire or other suitable material, but is preferably made of sheet metal such as spring brass,- and comprises a member 1 adapted for attachment to the collar (1, and a member 2 adapted to be slipped into the collar-button ocket or double portion of the neck-band o' theshirt. The member. 1 comprises two tongues 3 and 4 adapted to be assed 'throu h the button-* hole a of the co ar a and to ie, one at the upper side and one at the lower side of said buttonhole and upon the rear or outer side of "the collar. The member 1 also comprises the two portions 5 and 6 adapted to lie at the upper and lower sides of the buttonhole a uponthe inner side of the collar.
The neck-bands of shirts are usually provided with a double ortion or pocket, the buttonhole being in t e outer thickness, so that the base of the collar button shall be in closed in said ocket and thereby held out of contact with t e neck of the wearer. Inthe l; to make the fastener fiat and rela the tie.
drawings, b indicates the inner wall of the pocket or double portion, and b the outer wall.
The member 2 of the fastener may be of any suitable form adapted for insertion into the double portion of the neck band through the open lower end of the pocket formed by the walls I) and b. The members 1 and 2 are united at'their lower ends, as indicated at 7 in Fig. 1.
When used with the ordinary stand-up collar it is desirable that means he provided for holding the necktie from-upward dislacement. I have herein shown a hook 8 ormed integral withthe tongue 3, said hook being ada ted to receive the upper edge of i vhen the fastener is used with a turn-over collar it is obvious that such means need not be provided. Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate a collar fastener in which the book 8 is omitted.
In use, the tongues 3 and 4 are inserted through the buttonhole a of the collar from the inner side of the latter. Said tongues, in
conjunctibn with the portions 5 and 6,'firmly secure the fastener to'the collar. The member 2 is then slipped into the pocket in the neck-band from the open lower end of said pocket, and the ends of the collar secured together in front'in the usual manner. It will be seen that since the member :2 lies loosely between the walls b and b of the neck-band pocket, the fastener is free to adjust itself by sliding to either side within said pocket. When the collar is buttoned in place'in front the fastener is held from upward displacementwith relation to the neck-band by the closed upper end of the pocket and, from downward displacement by reason of the collar resting upon the base of the neck.
When engaged with the hook 8, the necktie covers the tongues 3 and 4, the fastener, proper, thus being com letely concealed.
It will be seen that I ave produced a very sim le and efiicient fastener. Being relative y thin and consequently occupying but little space, the'fastener permits the vest and the coat collar to fit close to the collar.
It is obvious that various changes may be ,inade in the embodiments herein illustrated- Without departing from the. spirit and scope of the invention, wherefore I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myselfto the precise details herein set forth.
adapted to extend throughthe buttonhole of the collar and engage opposite sides ofthe collar at each sideof the buttonhole, and a member adapted to lie loosely within the double portion of the neck band.
3. A collar fastener comprising a relatively v flat member adapted to extend through the buttonhole of the collar and engage olpposite sides of the collar at each side of t e utton- I hole, and a relatively flat member adapted to f lie loosely within the double portion of the neck-band, said members being connected together at their lower ends.
4. A collar fastener comprising a relatively flat member adapted to extend through the buttonhole of the collar and engage opposite sides of the collar; and a relatively flat mem 5. A col ar fastener com Using a memberada ted to extend throug the buttonhole of t e collar; tongues on said member adapted to' lie at the upper and lower sides of the buttonhole, at one side of the collar; members adapted to lie at the opposite side of the collar, and means to engage the neck-band. 6. A collar fastener comprising a member adapted to extend through the buttonhole of the collar tongues on said member ada ted to lie at the upper and lower sides ofthe uttonhole at one side of the collar; a tie holding hook on one of said tongues; means adapted to lie at the opposite side of the collar; and means to enga e the neck-band; A THONY ZIER.
