R. HARROP. i
LANTERN HOLDER. APIfLIoATIoN FILED 11111.16, 1967.
Mmmm@ M n UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEErcE.
ROLLO HARROP, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
LANTERN-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROLLO HARROP, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Lantern-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lantern holders, and its primary object is to provide a novel and highly useful device of this character which is adapted to be secured to a vehicle top to reflect the light in the path of the vehicle ahead of the horse.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illus- .trated in the accompanying drawings, where- 1n:
Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation of a lantern holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 2 designates an angle bar, to the member 3 of which is secured an arm 4, said arm providing means by which the holder is secured in applied position. One end of the arm 4 is formed to provide a threaded bolt 5, which passes through an opening in the member 3 at a point adjacent its lower end, and upon which is mounted a winged nut 6 to retain the arm in applied position. An angle plate 7 is mounted upon the bolt 5 between the member 3 and the end of the arms 4 to position its horizontal portion in engagement with the arm and its vertical portion in engagement with the member 3 to prevent the arm from having any movement independent of the bar 2, and thereby permit the lantern holder to be rigidly secured in applied position.
The lantern holder is adapted to be secured to one of the bars forming the upper frame work of a vehicle top, and to permit it to be thus applied, a screw hook 8 is carried by the arm 4 to engage the bar of said frame work. A winged nut 9 is mounted on the threaded ortion of the hook 8 to permit the arm 4 to be firmly clamped against the bar. To prevent the holder from having any movement upon the hook 8, a U-shaped member 10 is secured to the arm 4 to embrace the bar engaged by the hook. An L-shaped bracket Speccation of Letters Patent.
Application led January 16, 1907.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Serial No. 352,608.
11 is provided in its vertical portion with a longitudinally extending slot 12 through which projects the bolt 5. The bracket is mounted upon the bolt 5 between the member 3 of the bar 2 and the -nut 6, and it is vertically adjustable thereon for a purpose to be presently stated. An arm 13 forming the base of the holder and upon which the lantern is adapted to rest, is secured to the hori- Zontal portion of the bracket 11. A reflector hood 14 is secured to the member 15 of the bar 2 to reflect the light in the path of the vehicle ahead of the horse. Clamps 16 are secured to the reflector hood 14 at points near its opposite ends to position their hooked portions 17 in advance of the reflector hood. The hooked portions 17 are adapted to engage the side bars of the lantern frame to retain the same in position upon the base 13 of the holder. As the base 13 may be adjusted vertically, the lantern may be applied to and removed from the holder when the holder is in applied position. The clamps 16 are adapted to be constructed of wire having a sufficient rigidity to yieldingly retain the hooked portions 17 in engagement lwith the side bars of the lantern frame, and
as they are secured to the -reflector hood 14 only at one point, the hooked portions may be readily separated to permit a lantern to be readily and quickly applied to and removed from the holder. A
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention should be understood without a further extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what l claim is:
1. A lantern holder comprising an angle bar, a felector hood secured to one member of said bar, a bracket adjustably secured to the other member of said bar, a base secured to the bracket, clamps secured to the reflector hood and having hooked ends disposed in advance thereof for engagement with the side bars of the lantern frame to retain the lantern upon the base, and an arm secured to said bar, said arm providing means by which the lantern holder may be secured in applied position.
2, A lantern holder including arm provided with a bolt passing through` the bar, an L-shaped bracket provided with an elongated slot through which the bolt passes, and a nut mounted upon the bolt,
said nut securing the arm and .bracket to on the bar.
