1 Claim. (Cl. 240-571) This invention relates to improvements in supports or holders for illuminating devices and is particularly directed to a novel stand for a lantern.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide a simple, compact and adjustable stand for holding a lantern in attachment to any desired support, for example, a boat.
A further important object of the present invention is to provide a lantern stand which can be easily attached to and removed from any support and which is adjustable to position a lantern in any desired position.
The foregoing and ancillary objects are attained by this invention, the preferred form of which is set forth in the following description and illustrated in the attached drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lantern stand showing a lantern mounted thereon;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the upper end of the stand and showing the inner face of the reflector;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the stand, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the outer side or face of the reflector and the upper end of the stand, showing the means provided for securing the reflector in the desired vertical position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the stand includes an elongated standard 12 which terminates at its lower end in a collar 14 that carries an offset plate 16. The plate 16 is secured by a screw mem ber 18 in adjustable facial contact with an enlargement 20 on the web portion of a U-shaped clamp 22. The legs of the clamp carry screw clamps 24 for clamping the clamp on a support, which may, for example, be the gunwhale of a boat. The standard is adapted to be positioned perpendicular to the support by the clamp and is adjustable to desired angular positions, relative to the vertical, by the screw 18.
A platform 26 is rotatably mounted on the upper end of the standard by means of a collar 28 formed on the underside of the platform and rotatably circumposed on the upper end of the standard. A set screw 30 is radially extended through the collar to bear against the standard and lock the platform in the desired rotational position.
The platform is preferably circular in plan but may be of any desired shape and is formed with upstanding, circumferentially spaced, peripheral ears 32 that carry clamping screws 34 to clamp against the base 36 of a lantern 38, as shown in Figure 1.

the platform and is preferably disposed between the ears 32 so that a clamping screw 42, carried by the flange to engage the lantern base 36, is positioned equidistantly between the screws 34.
The flange 40 is arcuate in plan, corresponding to the circular shape of the platform, and supports an arcuate reflector 44. The reflector upstands from the flange and is attached by screws 46 to the outside of the flange. The reflector is provided with axial slots 48 to receive the screws, the slots 48 being provided to enable the reflector to be adjusted and locked by the screws at various elevations depending upon the height of the lantern.
Thus, the standard is adjustable by means of the screw member 18 about a horizontal axis relative to a horizontal support from which the standard upstands. The lantern is seated on the platform 26 and securely clamped thereon by the screw clamps 34 and 42. The platform is rotatably adjustable on the standard so as to position the reflector 44 in the desired position of reflection and the reflector is adjustable vertically or in height: corresponding to the size of the lantern.
While the preferred embodiment of this invention has been described and illustrated herein, other forms may be realized, as come within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed A lantern stand comprising a standard adapted to be vertically disposed and having an upper and a lower end, a pair of clamping elements pivotally mounted on the lower end and disposed in cooperative confronting relation, means for locking said elements in adjusted positions relative to the standard, said standard being adjustable relative to the elements about a horizontal axis so as to be adjusted to various angular positions relative to the clamping elements, each of said elements having movable jaw members arranged in confronting relation to grip on a fixed support, positive locking means for each jaw member to lock them onto supports of various sizes, a circular platform rotatably mounted on the upper end of the standard and on which the base of a lantern is adapted to be seated, ears upstanding in spaced apart relation from the edge of the platform, screw clamps threaded through the ears to lock the lantern on the platform, an upstanding supporting means on the platform and disposed on the edge between the ears, a semi-cylindrical reflector carried by the supporting means and pin and slot adjustment means securing the reflector to the supporting means for vertical adjustment of the reflector relative to the platform.
